I was thinking of buying a .338WM Savage model 116 and converting it over to a .308 or .30-06 with match SS barrel and choate stock. I would like to be able to put the .338WM barrel back on the action but I was thinking it would only require a new bolt head. Now I'm thinking it may require additional items and some machining. Can I do this relatively easy and if so, what would I need to buy and where should I purchase these items? Is the bolt head retaining pin the same for the magnum as it is for the standard head? Are the sizes the same? Would it be easier if I converted it to a .300WSM? Are there any diagrams or schematics with lengths/sizes for the different savage chambering?

Also, I would like to be able to install removeable magazines in the Choate stock. Is there any recommended products or services for this conversion?

Please enlighten me on any other items I may have forgotten. Thanks.

Thanks,
Jeremy

You got my hopes up until I read that you want to keep your .338 barrel ..... drats!

I just did my first build and went from a 7mm Rem mag to a .25-06.

Your situation will mimick mine.

I had to buy a '06 bolt head for a long action .... so will you.

Your small bolt head parts will all interchange or you could buy the extras and have a full set for each head.

Make sure your firing pin is the small one ..... and if it is ..... buy a bolt head for the '06 with the same small hole ...... there is just large and small .......

If it were me ...... I'd stick with the longer cartridge for your 116 as the .308 may be more of a challenge for feeding.

A good resource here is Sinarms (vendor) .......

Check out the articles .... you'll learn much ......... and once you've done your conversion .... don't forget to check the firing pin protrusion ..... it's important and easy to overlook for a newbie ...... (like me) ........ LOL

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel better that I wasn't expecting too much. I'm thinking of getting an additional bolt w/ head for the .30-06.
