I would like to put together a new rifle(s). Savage, of course.
Currently, most of my rifles are hunting rigs and I don't really have what I would call a varmint/target or tactical rifle.
At first I wanted to get a new action before one of the socialists got elected, but the nearly $4 per gallon gas has me thinking I will use my Mod 11 .204.
My plan is to get a new bolt head to handle 22-250, .243, .308 etc. sized cases.
Use existing bolt head for .204, .223, etc.
I'm thinking of getting a Richards stock (for one) and bedding it as it is pretty affordable and you can make it into something nice.
Optics - probably a Super Sniper 10x with Farrell base to help stiffen the action and probably Burris rings, but that could change if I find something better for the money.
Barrel - Probably Schillen, but anything of target quality and adaptable to a Savage will do.
After market ticket likely.

I can take coyote/ground squirrel/rabbit near home or even from home so I will likely use it some for that and I have a fairly lengthy range not far from home.
I also want a good rifle for home/nation protection as I see our nation rapidly crumbling and potentially dark times ahead.

What I am after would be along the lines of a home grown/poor man's AI or Tubb 2000 when in a 6.5 caliber.
I want this rifle to reach out there for several consecutive shots. I am well aware there is more to this than just the rifle.

My main question is:
Does anyone know how I might include a detachable mag on this rig?

Any other input appreciated.

Don't forget to change the magazine to accomadate the 308 sized case...
If you wanted a drop magazine...my idea would be to look at the new 12 VLP with drop mag...but thats a whole new rifle to buy...
Calibers ?? I'm quite fond of my two XLR (Extra Long Range) calibers..
6XC (6mm-250 Imp)
260 Ackley Imp
Both on M12 s/shot actions & 8 twist Pac Nor SS SM barrels

I like the idea of the 260 imp.

You should be able to get everything you need through Sharp Shooter Supply.

If you are looking for a worst case scenario rifle, remember that it should be something that you can find ammunition or components for easily. As much as I love my 6.5x284 it wouldn't be the rifle that I grabbed to run for the hills and live with for possibly years.

I would have a 22 rimfire and probably a 308. In an emergency you can pull all of the components out of found 30/30 ammunition, 30.06 ammo, 300 win ammo etc.

Since the 30 caliber cartridges are the most common loads found anywhere in the US, I would choose one of them.

Thanks for the reply guys.
I agree with all of you. I am going to be keeping my eye on the 6.5 Creedmoor, which is going to be pretty close to the .260 I think. Don't know about the brass yet.
I like the 6xc and have shot well with it. The brass is a little costly right?
That's what's cool about the Savage, I can have multiple calibers for the price of a new barrel.

Mag and bolt face will have to be changed. Another Savage +.

My present rifle has a blind mag.
Buying another rifle right now as things are tightening up is not looking good.

So buying another rifle is the only way to go for a detachable box mag?

Thanks again.

I'd do a 6.5x47 Lapua before I did the 6.5 Creedmor

+1 but I like the standard .260 Remington better than both...

Why???

Why???

6.5x47 slightly slower/longer barrel life.
.260 equal velocity/not as good case design.

Not a target shooter, but it seems the current trend is AWAY from longer narrower cases. The newer match rounds are the short/fat design that is claimed to have a more effecient powder burn.

If the defication ever hits the fan.......
And I wanted to live be my wits and fire arm....
I'd opt for a chambering easily " scrounged" or (stolen ) from the
Facists that would be ruling us!!!
There for .308!! or .223 !!
Not that I would ever Steal......... ;)
Just sayin!!!
In a POST democracy America we're all in it alone!
No time for reloading!

they are not equal in velocity ???

the AI version give you almost 6.5 x 284 velocity less barrel wear and less kick

Good input. Thanks guys.

I hadn't considered the .260 AI. I think anything in that class will do nicely.
Is not the standard .260 and 6.5 Creedmoor about equal velocity?
6.5 x 47, .260, Creedmoor all look fine and cases good to go as opposed to an AI. .260 possibly better feeding and great performance.

Came across this, fits right in:

(hope it's OK to do that?)
