I am looking to build a 6X45. I am looking for a platform to start with. I like the stock of the Lightweight Varminter -T and it comes in 223. I need to know if the barrel is changeable like the other Savages? Has any one tried this? Is the 25 built like a Remington and has to be rebarreled by a smith? I was going to build this on an AR upper but it is going to cost around 900 with tools. I am looking to spend around 700 to get what I am after. It is my understanding that I can get the 25 for less than 500, is that true?

Yes I got my 25 for under 500. Light weight varmint with thumbhole stock in .223.
My model 25 is not like other savages that have a barrel nut. It would require a smith to install a barrel.
(supposedly the newer ones are coming with barrel nuts)
I do not know whether or not you could just thread the barrel out a little longer and throw a barrel nut on it, and then swap out the needed bolt parts.

I would go with a new Stevens 200 or cheaper savage model, then just buy whatever else is needed. Have fun.

Ive yet to see a M25 with barrel nut. You can find a Stevens 200 for about $350 and at wallymart the Savage M11, w/accutrigger for about $490 w/scope then contact jim at NSS and get the 6x45 bbl. I built my 6x45 on a Savage FP10 that I shot the .223 bbl out in after 26yrs of p-dogging.
of course thats not the M25 action or stock.
The M25 bbl is pinned and thats going to require a smith to replace if you want the M25.
