Stevens 25-06...

Looking to pick one up for hunting deer....never fooled around with a quarter-bore before...
wanting to run the Sierra 100gr SBT... ;D

Great rifle and caliber. You can expect the trigger to be heavy and creepy. It can be tuned by you to a nice hunting trigger by replacing the heavy outer wire spring with a lighter one and then adjusting the set screws a bit. The stock is flexy (is that a word?). It will bend under pressure and can change zero if this happens. I have free floated a couple of the stocks to avoid any contact by the barrel and stock. From that point you will have a great shooter. I use 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips and H4350 powder.

My mother-in-law won a Stevens 200 in 25/06, in a raffle, and she gave it to her son. (After I turned it down, he wanted it more than I did.) I sighted it in for him, I put a Mueller 8-24 scope on it, and a set of Burris rings. Recoil was not bad, but with the short eye relief of the scope it did come back and bight me a few times. The recoil pads are hard, and changing them out to a libsaver makes a BIG difference. I don't think your wife would have a problem with it. My brother-in-law loves his and his 12 year old son shoots it all the time. His shot like most savages I have seen, great. I was able to make some one hole groups with it at 100 yards.

Muzzle blast can be pretty loud in a 22 inch barrel. Recoil is not any worse than a .243 IMO due to the gun being a long action and therefore a bit heavier. It is my favorite deer caliber. The deer seem to drop in their tracks.

The Stevens rifles should be great.

The 25-06 cartridge is superb!

But the Stevens rifle with a 22" barrel chambered for 25-06 is TOO SHORT!!!!

Same thing with the .270's .......

In an '06 it's not so bad but these 22" sporter barrels in the faster cartridges is not efficient.

I just did my first Savage build. I mated a .25-06 Savage brand 26" SS bull barrel that I bought on this forum to a Savage 110 I have had for just over a year that was wearing a sporter 24" blued 7mm Rem mag barrel.

That 26" barrel is a much better choice for the "25" than a 22"er.

As far as I'm concerned a .25-06 ought not wear anything shorter than a 24 with a 26 being that much better.

If you are going to a 22" one should go for a 257 Roberts or a .250-3000.

One of my sons started shooting a 25-06 when he was 11 and weighed about 90 lbs. Just put a limb saver on it and your wife will be good to go. The 22" barrel is servicable, but if you get into the 25-06, you will eventually end up with a 26" barrel. If you really get into the 25-06, that barrel will be Ackley Improved. ;D
