About 4 years ago I purchased a Savage Mod 11 GNR (7mm-08), put a scope on it, and have killed two pigs and three deer with it. Absolutely nothing wrong with it in its current configuration. But it's the only rifle I owned that I had not 'tampered' with...something can always be made 'better'...right? So, I had Jim up at EGW make me a Picatinney rail for it that starts at the back edge of the receiver and runs continuously forward a full 10". I then had Leupold's Custom Shop make me a 1.5-4x Scout Scope for it. Now I'd like to figure out if I can put some backup iron sights on it. Would prefer a ghost ring rear with wide blade front. But the barrel looks mightly thin at the muzzle. I'm not sure there's enough metal there to sink a couple screws to anchor a front sight. Anyone have any experience with adding a front sight to a Model 11?

Look at the Savage 10 FCM scout.
It has a Williams ramp on the front of the 20.5"sporter weight barrel and a .375" height bead sight dovetailed in to the ramp.
On the rear (attached to the rear scope mount holes) is a standard Williams aperture sight. With no aperture inserts, it acts as a ghost ring.
It has a Savage scout sight rail that attaches to the front sight base holes and a hole drilled and tapped in the barrel.

You can get many different apertures, adjustable or not, for the rear sight.

You might also want to consider having something like the Williams "Ace in the Hole" made for you. See page 2 of their catalog: http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/pdf/2012_Catalog.pdf (http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/pdf/2012_Catalog.pdf)

Front Firesight, (for the existing streamlined ramp on the Savage Scout: narrow, .375" high: Williams 56436: page 6 in their catalog
Front sight hood for firesight: Williams 70031, also page 6 of their catalog
Rear sight is the Williams WGRS-SAVAGE: (page 13 of the catalog)

I hope this gives you at least some ideas.
Good luck!

There are front sigthts that are a shrink fit on the barrel, no dovetail or screws needed but you need a gunsmith to do that work. Shouldn't cost much.

You could put a Magpul backup iron sight on the rear of the rail but then you'd have to get front sight height to line up with it. Just like an AR and it could co-witness through the scope, giving 2 sighting options at once.
