I want to build a plinker in 7.62x39 using a 10 receiver. I've looked at a few of the major barrel makers and they don't seem to make barrels in that caliber. Anyone here can point me in the right direction?

The case head on the commie ammo is a bit small for good extraction in the savage, you may find you need the bolt head changed also. .223 heads can be turned larger to fit.

Savage makes the correct sized bolthead.
I have had no ejection problems.
The factory barrel is .308 groove diameter but shoots .311 ammo ok.
Also, any good gunsmith hopefully ought to be able to chamber a barrel blank to 7.62x39.

I have been less than pleased with ejection on my 300blk conversion, even after the fixes. I may just go to a ruger action for the 300blk, and I'm thinking my .308 diam savage barrel could be rechambered to 7.62x39. Hoping .308 diam bullets, especially heavier weights will shoot well out of the 1:8 barrel. If not, I'll take it to 300 ossm or 308win. Some of the BLK barrels are very reasonable if you wanted to try something similar. First one done updates!

give dan wynne at mcgowen a call or email, he will set you up with a barrel for the 7.62x39. They use a .310 groove. Bought one from him a year or so ago and built a rifle on an older 223 long action. You will need to send the bolt to SSS to have the PPC bolt head/extractor conversion done also. sold mine to jonbearman here on this site afterwards and he was getting awesome groups with it (under 1/2 inch with factory lapua and under .3 @ 200 with his handloads). Mine was an 18" 1/10 twist stainless varmint contour on an older 110 action with an early stockade stock. Grafs used to carry the factory Lapua 7.62x39 ammo in boxes of 30 for around $30. I think it is the best 7.62x39 factory ammo out there, and if you reload, the best brass after you shoot it.

good luck

If you plan to reload for this rifles, I'd seriously consider a .308 barrel due to the greater number of available bullets, lightweight for speed, and heavy for subsonic loads.

Also, I would think that, since it is a factory part, you should be able to get the correct bolthead directly from Savage.

I bought a mcgowen barrel from another member with low round count and I used an early short /long action with the .223 baffle and a 6ppc conversion bolt head from sss. It works perfect and extraction is fine and the .310 groove barrel is working just great with sierra pro hunter 125's and benchmark I believe. It is there hunting/accuracy load. I love the thing. Any questions just pm me.

I was only looking to swap out the barrel and the bolt face to fit the AK ammo. I'm not really looking to reload AK ammo, I'll save reloading for more expensive ammo such as .308 Win.

Have you thought about useing a chamber adapter? Just drop it in and go!

There is a Set of Williams sights, front and rear in the for wale section that you could probably use if you swap out the barrel with a sporter weight barrel.

Pac Nor lists it and I have a 15tw in this chamber but have not screwed it on my FCM yet. This is a .308 bore as is the factory 10tw it came with. Hoping to shoot the 125 gr. Nosler BT with it and is the reason for a 15tw, more velocity/better accuracy?

If you dont reload this caliber, you will not be overly happy with the accuracy as alot of import rounds are all differently sized and the bullets vary a bit as that stuff is for spraying.I tried what I thought was better commercial import garbage, and it shot like 2 inches. It is seriously a real good idea to reload for this round.I shot a .286 group at 200 with mine with good reloads.
