firing pin woes

on my older .270,what should the overall lenght of my firing pin be?how much pin protrusion?thanks,pete

i think fractory settings are .055 ,But i have all off mine set at .o45
with no problems

when i got this gun someone had the bolt apart and lost one of the washers.i fixed that but didnt trust the legnht they had it so i checked another .270 and matched it at 53/4".forgot to check its protrusin but mine is .059.made up 5 rounds to test fire it with.4 went and one didnt.used cci primers and hand set them.pin strikes looked a little light to me.i think factory shells wouldev fired but dont know.more tension on spring?pete

didint have guages but used a piece of masking tape on sized case and bolt started to bind.

According to People I trust on this forum, Set your firing pin protrusion at .035" and then set the firing pin spring length at 2.6000" for long action and 1.9000" for short actions.

whats the pr oper way to measure the pin protrusion?im holding the firing pin(assembled with the spring) in the bolt then measuring from the top of the bolt head to the bolt face, then to the firing pin then subtracting the diff.i shortened the spring about .060 to get the 2.600 measure on the spring.

Pete, looks like you are measuring protrusion O.K. The spring length of 2.600 is maximum length, it can be adjusted shorter. Check the cocking piece pin, in the fired position it should have some movement, there needs to be approx. 0.005" clearance between pin & bolt body. Otherwise the cocking piece pin will act as firing pin stop.

I adjusted mine today on my model 11 in 223 and after fiddling with it for 30 min or so i had protrusion set at .029". I was aiming for .035 or so but its really hard to adjust and then reassemble to check it again. And the measurement i got while disassembled was always diff than when i reassembled it. I tested it on a few pieces of extra primed brass.....only primers and not live rounds....and the 2 i tried both went off nicely. Im gonna make a range trip tomorrow to try a few live rounds. Hopefully i wont have to adjust it more.

I didnt know what to set the spring tension to so i just adjusted it to the little ramp to make sure it got close to bottoming out but not touching anything. Ill measure the spring and see how close i am to 1.900".

Measure your firing pin protrusion, and then adjust the requisite number of quarter turns to lengthen or shorten. reassemble and measure again. You should be good to go.

will check cocking piece pin and go over post #13 within the next few days and prime some cases and see where im at.if it works,thanks for the help and if it dont,ill be back.pete
