short action to short

Howdy, I built a 300 blackout on a short action and after a while ejection got less than positive. Combined with the need to put up with a massive jump to the lands. I scrapped the plan rechambered to 308 and bought some trailboss to fill my subsonic needs but the magazine is still too short to get the bullet even close to the lands . I am thinking the 308, 243 and 260 projects are better served on long actions........So............. What in god's green earth are these silly short actions good for besides a single shot? I am thinking trade fodder toward a long action but curious why or how any body puts up with them.

I read on here all the time where people are concerned with using long bullets in short action cartridges and complaining about magazine length not letting them use bullets that the rifle was never designed to use. The simple solution is forget the short action and go with a long action and use 3 inch long javelins if you want. Using the short actions for this purpose and then complaining about the short magazines just doesnt cut it when the long action solves the problem with less hassle.

I here ya. but any bullet would be making a long jump in this thing. the question would probably be better fazed : any cartridge other than the 223 suitable for this action?

If it is a centerfeed magazine, there is a spacer block in the rear of the mag box for .223. Replace the magazine box and follower with a standard .308 magazine box and follower and you will have significantly more length in the magazine.
You could also get a single shot loader.

Not shortened with a spacer should be fine for your .308

If a mag-length round is "too short to get even close to the lands" in a Savage, you don't have an action/mag length issue...you have a barrel throat issue.

Exactly right.

That is one of the reasons I prefer a custom chambered tube over any of the generic prefit tubes.

I still wish the old SF SA mags were as long as the newer CF mags though. Solely for seating the longer high BC bullets out of the powder column.

Thanks for all the replies, I put a 308 magazine in it. This chamber does have a long throat that would require VLDs at 2.9+ . I love prefit barrels but this is not one of them anymore.... Anyone think of a cartridge in the 6-6.5 calibers that will feed as a repeater that will come in with a .2 shorter oal without extremely recessed bullet seating?

I had 3.00" of mag length with a centerfeed 308 blind mag, and had no problem running my 260 to 2.94" OAL (0.010" jump) with 130gr Berger VLDs in a Criterion barrel.

6.5 Creedmoor will do that with ease. As will the 6mm-250 (what 6.5CM looks to be based on), 6mm BR, 6XC. Actually there is quite a few that will work.

I heard the 6br is problematic in a repeater. Is that a falsehood?

Being a staggered feed this thing will hold 2.91" but wont reliably feed anything over 2.820".

the 6mm br is not the easiest to get to eject properly. you have to get the new ejector from sss. the problem i am having in my 6mm br is once the brass has about 5 reloads on it the rim looses its sharpness and it does not always come flinging out of the action sometimes it just spins around and sits on top of the next round in the mag. i am thinking of rechambering to 6x47 lapua. the problem with the 6mm br is that it is so short the ejector runs out of travel as the brass runs down the right side rail. When this happens the extractor looses its grip on the case and drops it right there.
