Yes, it does. After you remove the threaded tenon, you turn down the shoulder of the barrel for your small shank Savage threads.

Almost all shouldered barrels will have enough material to cut the tenon off and thread the shoulder for a Savage.

All the dozen or so small rings I've ever torn down are under an inch in diameter ahead of the shoulder.

I see the problem with a shank like the pic nsaqam posted. Green Mtn lists a new barrel that appears to not have the step seen in orig take offs. Diam is listed at 1.13, but I'm not sure of the length of the larger diameter. If there is insufficient length for barrel nut thread engagement at the required diam, would a shoulder setup require less length of the larger diameter? Would 1.13 allow sufficient diameter for a shoulder?

I am enjoying my new Stevens and Savage rifles and trying to learn about them while making mistakes on less expensive components. This forum has been extremely helpful.
Would I be better to find a 308 takeoff? Could it be set back enough to rechamber to 7.62x39?

A shoulder would indeed require less shank length but starting at 1.13 would leave only a very small shoulder (1.13-1.055 = .075/2 = .038").
Not nearly enough IMO.
You'd also need a PPC bolthead.

My recommendation would be to start with a .308 blank and have it chambered for the 7.62x39.

Maybe your smith could get you a savage barrel in 7.62 x 39 with a .308 bore. Savage does make them.
Gun shack is running a group buy on 30 cal barrels, perhaps if you talk to them really nicely they can get you in there with either an unchambered barrel or a 7.62x39 (.308) barrel.
