Hey guys, I just got a Savage 111 .300 Winnie. I'm going to be shooting the 208 A-Max and everything I have read so far has pointed me toward Hodgdon H1000 as the best powder. The nearest place that carries H1000 is 120 miles from me. I have access to IMR-4831 and Reloader 22. Should I try to work up a load with either of these or just hold off until I can get some H1000?

Thanks!

If that nearest place that carries H1000 is 120 miles away, you might be better off ordering some. If it were me, I would try and work up a load with what you already have.

I've recently become a fan of Alliant powders since they perform so well in all of my rifles, RL-22 is relatively clean burning compared to other powders and is one or the most temp stable of the reloader series of powders. I would give it a shot, it has yet to disappoint me when used in all the magnums I reload for.

Right on, thanks guys. I bought some RL22 yesterday and will be working up loads as I get time.

IMHO exsperience --- R22 IS temp sensitive
where i live we can have a 60@f temp swing in one day- many days
I switched to H1000 with excelent results
208 Amax over 70gr averaged .5 moa
temp seems to have no affect on it
I would wait for the H1000
thats just me though....

Do you know anything about Power Pro 4000MR? It's a magnum powder that I use in my 6.5 swede. I know it's a completely different round and rifle but I got better results with it than I did with reloader 22.

I like RL22 a lot and I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

To add another choice to your thought process I'd seriously consider trying out some of the amazing Accurate Magpro.
Since I discovered Magpro it has become my go to powder for any cartridge remotely suitable for it.
Every cartridge I've used it in turned in the highest speeds and excellent accuracy. Being a ball powder it also meters perfectly straight from the measure. No trickling charges for me when Magpro is in the measure.
