Savage F/TR rifle choice

Hello Fellas
This is my first post and have questions about a F/TR rifle choice for a beginner F/TR shooter.
I want to get involved in 1000yd F/TR and need some imput on the savage rifle Good or bad?
hows the Barrel,chamber deminsions for 215gr Berger Bullet,any advice would help.

Well you are talking about the 215 berger so i will take it you are looking at the 308. First question is why the 215? The 175 will do all you need done out to 1000 yards and you could even go down to the 155. The rifle will do fine. The cheek riser that comes with them are not much so i would look at some other adjustable cheek piece. Some bores are rough and some are fairly smooth for a factory gun but they all seem to shoot well. I don't use the 215 but am going to assume in the factory barrel they will work ok.

They are 12 twist barrels, so that wouldn't be optimal for the 215's. I can attest to the 168 and 175 Sierra's shooting great in my F/TR. I use the 168 matchking with RL15, and Sierra's accuracy load. They all go in almost 1 hole at 100. I have not shot it in comp., and have not shot it passed 100 yet.

I just rebarreled my 12 ftr from 308 to 6 Dasher. I used the 175 SMK last year exclusively at all ranges. Previously I did use 168's for 300 and 600, but the 175 gr was just as accurate and held up at 1K. I did not notice any difference in recoil between the two. 215 grs you will notice the recoil. I used to shoot F T/R with the .308 only...... I now compete with a .223 and yes, I shoot it out to 1000 yards. As long as the wind is called correctly, it will do it. To equal the wind drift of my 90 grain VLDs you'd have to shoot 185-190 grain bullets. But they can take a toll on your body after a long day.

If your're looking at a rig, and have the chance to shoot a match, go experience one. Mid Range NRA matches run from 300-500-600 yards and Long Range run 600-800-900-1000 yards. The one area where people get confused..... It's a single shot, single loaded game..... you don't have to have a tactical rig........ T/R stands for Target Rifle..... it doesn't stand for Tactical Rifle......
