Savage 340 30-30 re-chambering?

Is it possible/practical/safe to re-chamber a Savage 340E in 30-30 to 300 Savage? Has anyone tried to chamber a 340 in any caliber other than what came from the factory?

While I do not have a 340 I believe you will find that the pressure of the Savage round is higher than the 340 is made to handle. There may be magazine issues as well. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the 340 will chime in here.

The only thing I would consider rechambering it to would be the .30-30 AI. The .300 Savage would be great on an M10 action though!

You could have someone rebore it to one of the larger cartridges based on the 30-30 (35-30, 38-55) but that would have you into a lot of money on a not very valuable rifle.

Use it for what it is - handy little knockabout gun!

I really like the 340 just the way it is...although the older 340's could use a better trigger. I just thought there might be a way to boost the effectiveness a little with the 300 Savage. With the Leverevolution round in 30-30, the 340 is a GREAT deer gun...I have taken 3 deer so far this year with mine...all with one shot each. Thanks for the replies...this is the best place for any questions related to Savage firearms.

The 340 is not a very strong action design. The locking is by a single forward lug and the bolt handle. That is the reason Savage never chambered them for the high intensity cartridges. I think the new 30-30 loadings are the way to go, rather than a rechambering.
