Would a rimmed 17 Hornet work on the Savage short action? I'm wondering if the round could be made to feed from a standard magazine... and which bolt head could be used for the 17 hornet? It would be easier to buy a model 25 in 17 Hornet... or I could have a barrel made for my Encore... but I like my Savage short actions. Just wondering...

Have made 22 hornet single shot only ,and that was not worth all the PROBLEMS. I used a bushed 223 bolt .,
I had to make new extractor and cot bolt face and cut barrel for extractor clearance. I do get carried away by challenges. If money is no issue than yes im sure someone can!

Forgot to say the 218 bee down to 17 would be easier

So would a .17 Fireball, I've thought the same thing as the OP though. For now though, I have varmints and medium game covered (various rimfires, .223, and 7mm-08). A Hornet would fit in there nicely as would a nice lever in 44RM or 30-30. A 7.62x39 carbine (detachable mag pump or lever) would be fun too. Who knows what the future may bring to the safe, deciding is half the fun.

I did it with a 17 Fireball. I took a Stevens action and re-barreled it with a 17 Fireball. "Made" a CZ .221 Fireball detachable magazine "work" for it. I use it as my primary fox getter. However, I am waiting for Savage to release their 17 Hornet in the Model 25.

Why? Because it will be a lighter, sleeker, easier to handle rifle than my current Stevens. My Stevens will give me some grief in the reloading of a second shot. Because of the spring strength of the CZ mag, I can only put two additional rounds in the mag.

I know....I COULD fool with the spring tension.....but usually when I mess with spring tension....I end up in the ER room with a spring thru my eye and the other end coming out of my ear. And I know one of these times the Dr. on duty will figure out that I don't actually have a brain......and I will be transported to Area 51....never to be seen again!!!!

It's just easier to buy the Model 25. ;D

The 17 Fireball makes the most sense... the 17 Akley Hornet has a lot of appeal... but the bold head could be a real problem. And, the 17 Hornet would have to be a single load.
