i have a mcqowen 223 barrel 8twist that was short throated to only shoot 69gr heads and under well i wanted to shoot 80 pills in it so i gave it and a dummy round for the smith to legthen the throat on it for me simple job he said 20 bucks and he can do it while i wait. wife took it to him and he did the work except instead of going 2.430 coal or 1.881 to the ogive he bored to 2.648 coal .now the bullet just sit barley in the boat tail. i called him up and cant understand how it happened but told me he will make it right even if he has to buy me a new barrel . so the question of the day is should i get a 223 wylde or stay with my origonal plan and have the throat legthened for the bullet i want to shot(lapua brass 80 grain amax head seated 1.881 ogive?) ?

I would think the smith is only liable to fix what he messed up and put things back to the spec he was supposed to and if you have him re-cut the chamber or throat to something else that is a new job.

Definitely something that would have to be discussed with your gunsmith. Sounds like a stand up guy, so I don't think I would try to take advantage of him.

Replacing the barrel is his idea not mine mine is to cut and re chamber . And yes he is a stand up guy his work is normally straight up

From what I understand the Wylde is a shorter throated chamber so it wouldn't make any sense to go that route if you will just have it lengthened any way.

I was not to implying that it was your idea to replace the barrel. More of a statement of work with your gunsmith, because he is a stand up guy. Changes from what was originally the plan should be discussed before saying "This is what I want".

fixing it would be faster and cheaper, would be maybe 1/4" shorter total length to do it.

thats the route i told him i would prefer if possible i just came back gave him the whole rifle he told me he would make it right one way or the other i also told him not to worry about getting it ready for the may f class match that my son will just shoot my 308 or 6.5 creedmoor in open class. i'd rather not rush working up a load for it and like you said even if he takes off 1/2" its still gonna be 25 1/2" the fps wont drop much at all.

jackinSD its cool nothing taken the wrong way man i just hate for him to have to come out of his pocket for a new barrel i offered to pay 1/2 but like i said i would rather have that one back since i know its a shooter.

Glad you understand. Sometimes, the English language can be difficult to get across exactly what you are trying to say. And yes English is my first language. :)

Did you shoot it and see how it performs? Seating bullets to thd lands is very overrated.

he still has it he asked for me to drop the entire gun off and he will take care of it one way or another. i start at the lands and work my way out i do things alittle different i shoot 2 5 shot groups in different increments then compare those did that saturday with the creedmoor .then i'll pick the ones that looked prommissing and load up 10 more in increments starting off the lands .i know it wastes bullets but i get trigger time in and nothing helps improve you more than trigger time.for the creedmoor it liked 42.0-42.5 gr (.5's and .6's)so i'll continue there.

gunsmith made good on barrel and didnt want the old barrel he took out roughly 5/16th to much is there another caliber it can be chambered to i hate to see it trashed it shot lasers if i did my part right . thinking 22-250 something thats not to hard to reload for .its a 26" mcqowen 8t .223 right now

Very easily rechambered and it can be done by you in your own home with a hand turned rented reamer. .223AI would work, .22-250 wouldn't as there is too much taper in the .22-250 case, .22-250AI would, .22-243 Middlestead would be a screamer as would .22-06.

I don't remember the dimensions off the top of my head, but wouldn't 22-6mm work also? That 1 in 8 should take care of most everything.

i dont think 223 ai would work since the i was wanting the throat reamered for 80 gr amax which was 1.884 ogive and he took out so much that my hornady chamber guage wont work(bullet falls out of the case so i cant get a reading)

Yes it would and that would be a very sweet chambering.

I don't know any human that can turn a hand reamer as good as a machine. The ones I know would put some side pressure on the reamer as they turn it, making a less then perfectly round chamber. Your smith done you a solid! Have him rechamber it. Ask him what reamers he has in stock and pick one.

It's simple.

I did at least a dozen that way before I got my lathe and I can tell no difference in accuracy, longevity or in resizing the brass.

That said, having the magnanimous gunsmith rechamber the barrel is a fine idea.

I would say too that renting a reamer for the chamber you want rather than settling for what the 'smith has on hand is a good idea.
