Determining Original Savage Model number by Ser#?

All,

Is there a way to deduce, or determine the original Savage model number of a receiver, based on the model number or some other markings located on the receiver?

I'm working on some SBR paperwork and would like to be able to accurately list the proper original model number to avoid any confusion/discrepancies.
