Just picked up a model 110 in 22-250. I got this to add some distance in coyote hunting over my 22 magnum. The scope on the 22-250 is a simmons
8-32 x 44 AO. I can zoom in on a flea at 300 yards, LOL. Is this overkill.I am in West Virginia and will rarely have over a 250 -300 yrd shot.

so what is your question? if it is the scope being too big i would say yes. i shoot a 4-14 power scope on both my 22-250 and my 243ai and i do just fine at distance. the longest dog i took this winter was 546 yards and that was holding over as i remember my drops. i dont know what kind of coyote hunting you do, but is you do any calling you will find out quick that the 8 power is too much when you need to make a shot quick within 150 yards or less. hope this answers your question

+1. Lots of your shots will have to be made quick and you wont have time to be zooming and focussing. Ive learned that a decent 3-9, 3-12 or 4-16 without AO is best.

yes that was my question, thanks. I do also carry a 12 ga for the closer shots

unless you are set up and have a pretty good idea where they are coming from or you ar in an elevated position where you can see them from a distance that scope is not optimal. i have a 8-32 lower end vortex and i have used it on one of my 243 ackley's and have shot groups to 900 yards and i think they work great for group work and distance, but not close posiible snap shots.
if thats what you got though then i wouldnt let it keep me from going out.

I have 3 of them. great for bench! 8X is very tough on a moving target! Takes valuable time to find a running yote. Your field of view is so small background things like the barn are in the zone faster then you can react if you are pulling the trigger. Lucky me I had not pulled the trigger.

I run 6-24x44 scopes on all my varmint rigs, but when out calling coyotes its always on 6x for field of view & fast aquisitions. The only time I zoom in is when they are 400 or more yards out and Im checking on thier movments.

My passion is calling predators and I hunt everything from the rainforests of WA, norhtern deserts and farm country , this year I got down in the southwest and never felt under scoped with my 1.5x6. This season I had 3 coyotes at less than 6' and the longest at 190 yrds. The shortest and longest were shot on 1.5x(didn't have time to change).

Coyotes pop out of the cover at some very short ranges and you never knew they were coming so I find FOV to be much more important to me than X's on a calling rig.

My three favorite calling rigs.

Savage 11 6mm-204 1.5x6x40 Burris Sig. Sellect

Stevens 200 22-204 1.5x6x40 Sightron II

Yeah definately massive overkill. 3-9x is great, though my main varmint rig wears a fixed 6x.

IMO...unless you're shooting at static or semi-static targets at ranges in excess of 600yds and more, anything over 9x is wasted; fixed or variable.
