I have a Stevens 200 in .308.

I will not be competing with this setup and I'm looking for something that will work at ranges between 200 and 500 yards.

I'm thinking 10 twist with .080 free bore shooting 87gr vmaxs or equivalent and .269 nk. Barrel length 24" or 26".

Would anyone strongly disagree with these specs for a 6br that could do reasonably well at distances in the 200 - 500 range?

Also some help with finding a true bench rest stock with wide foreend would be appreciated. The bell and Carlsons are popular but more tactical in nature. Can't seem to find true bench rest stock for the savage.

you will get a lot more input on the 10/110 board that covers Stevens 200's too.

I would go faster twist myself - never saw it hurt lighter bullets (within reason) and it gives you the option to shoot heavier after your throat moves forward.

I have a 6br I think you want an 8 twist thats what mine is. Also I have a no turn neck. Mine shoots the 87 grn Vmax under .20" groups all day long. ;)

What is your barrel length and at what distances do you shoot?
What barrel manufacturer?

I would second the 8 twist recomendation. I have an 8 twist, not turn neck, LW varmint that can shoot 105 amax's into .4 at 200yds. The furthest I have shot it is 300 yds and it is consistently around 1" at 300. Could probably do better with a better shooter/wind reader. I have never tried the 87 vmax in it, but think it would be good. The amax are pretty explosive as it is.

For a true benchrest stock, I think you will have to go custom. Check SSS, Rayhill, and stockade. I don't have any of them, but hear their names alot in the higher end custom stock conversations...

If you don't mind, I would love to know your OAL and load for the 87gr. V-Max.

I just picked up some to try on P-Dogs. You can PM me if that would be ok.

Thanks

My 6mm Norma BR no turn neck is a 28" Lothar Walther stainless barrel. I use mainly the 105/107 grain bullets and until recently, had no way to shoot farther than 100 yards. Now I have access to a 300 yard range and will get back to medium range load development.
