Rimfire stock mod from Centerfire stock

Well, I had the time this morning and got to thinking about a few things. I had an unused Savage 11 combo stock that was never going to see an action again. I like the recoil pad (even though not needed on a rimfire) and wondered if it would work with the rimfire stock without too much hassle so I could get a longer LOP for my 6' frame. I also figured out that the contour is close to the same and decided to use the buttstock from the CF to make a cheek riser. I took both to the garage and got to work.

As you can see, the CF pad is shaped differently and I did have to do some dremel work.

I got it to the proper size and needed to get the inside of the rimfire stock to accept it by carving out the top and bottom attachment points. First I cut the CF stock up and prepared it for the riser. I wanted to make sure that everything would line up correctly before I started messing with the rimfire stock too much.

I also liked what had been done to the forend of the stocks by some other people and decided to do that too. I settled on cutting at the second cross web part of the stock. It is where my hand went when I got into a seated position. I lined it up on my chop saw so that I would cut just forward of the top and shave the bottom of that web part. I also laid the stock on its side to get a profile other than perpendicular to the top. I finished off with a pilot hole (11/64 drill bit for swivel stud designed for wood stocks).

I roughed up the internal area around the stud and used steal epoxy to lock it in place. A few pilot holes, 10X20 screws, attaching the recoil pad (used the screws from the rimfire stock for better purchase and white lithium grease on the screw driver because the rubber really grabbed it), and remounting the barreled action....

I think it turned out pretty well. The recoil pad to stock fit is a little sloppy, but it is solid. I was holding it and the dremel by hand and the two got away from me a little from time to time. I still have to figure out how to carry around a spare mag either in the stock with some more modifications, or make a pouch attached to the sling for at least one loaded magazine. The only thing I have invested in this is time so far. The stock, epoxy, screws were all left-overs from other projects. The bolt comes out right over the top of the riser. Now I just have to hit the range and shoot this buggar. I have 6 different WMR loads that I will try later today or tomorrow. I like having days off when the weather is nice :D

I think it's an awesome job. Yea there's a little gap in the recoil pad, but given it was done be hand, excellent work. A tactical WMR, gotta love it. How does the heavy barrel shoot? I have the 93GL version.

Oh yes, I meant to add, I would use some flat sections of the donor stock, and vaccuform a molded piece to mount on the off side (bolt handle side) of the new cheek rest. I think a vaccuform would be fairly easy to do. I have seen guys make a wood box with a perforated top and an opening where a shopvac can be attached. I would then lay out 2 extra mags, with about an inch between them and lay the plastic, cut larger enough to easily cover them and form inbetween the two of thm and some extra along the sides to mount with, and cover it all in plastic wrap. This part might be tricky. You might have to heat the donor piece first, then lay it on the block, and turn on the vac.

Another way is to get a donor piece large enough to attach it to the box itself and seal the edges, then turn on the vac and use a heat gun to melt it down to form around the magazines. Might not work, but hey, the whole tactical stock idea might not have worked, but it did. ;D

Good idea, but I think the stock material may be a little difficult to work with. I'm also toying with the idea of going to a pistol grip folder using some rod stock and epoxy. I could then get a couple magazine holders (like from the bottom of the action) and mount those under the folding section protected on the sides by another custom riser. Lots of ideas, not enough excess pieces or money to work with. For now I'm happy with what it is. I have only shot it a few times, but 1"-1.5" at 100 yards is doable on a regular basis, but I want it better. This the journey for my vision of perfection begins.
