I'm looking at a couple of possibilities for a project, and the most enticing is a long action rifle. I'll be building either a 223, 260, or 308, and while I've seen this done, what's the proper way to make these rounds functional in a long action? Does the mag box have a spacer of some kind in it?

The 260 and 308 will do fine on a long action. The 223 takes a little work . Savage used to make a 223 on a long action. They used a spacer in the magazine and a longer front baffle to shorten the bolt pull about a half an inch.

I'll stick with one of those then. Thanks for the quick reply!

I have an early 22-250 that is factory built on a long action receiver (5" action screw spacing), and the receiver has a small magazine cutout in the bottom. It might be fun to track down one of those actions for your build.

I just finished a .243 Win on a long action and it works fine. Go forth w/ no worries!

I've done a 260, 6.5 Lapua, 223 AI, 308 and 223 Rem on a long action w/o any problems.

What extra parts did you have to buy besides a bolt head and baffle? Did you have to change firing pins on the .223? Thanks!

when I went from 30-06 (older flat rear rec)to a 204 the 223 bolt head was slightly shorter, I would get the proper assembly when you order the bolt head. they went to a smaller pin/ hole also. I just use a single shot floor plate, kept it simple.

+1 on the single shot follower, makes life easier.
