I posted a few weeks ago about ejecting problems with my model 10FLP. Have put in the SSS kit (extractor, ball, spring, and new ejector and spring). Ejected properly maybe 70% of the time. Put in a new factory ejector and spring and it is maybe moved up to 80-85%.

Am I crazy to expect 100% reliability with this bolt gun? Do I need to replace the bolt head or the whole bolt? I have been a Savage fan but this is really starting to tick me off. Any suggestions appreciated.

How much bigger is the bolt head compared to the case head?

Haven't checked that. Just measure with calipers? What is an acceptable difference?

Thanks

El Lobo,

Please elaborate. Do I need to replace the bolt head? What should it be?

Thanks,

Marty

Replace the bolthead. Save the ejector and extractor parts. Disassemble them in a baggy or the spring loaded parts will fly about. Look in the FAQ section for instructions.

The nominal size is .473", but don't expect to ever see one that size. Normally the bolt head diameters will run .485-.489".
SAAMI spec for cases call for .473 max to .463 min. Most manufacturers will always be to the minimum size.
Your bolt face is causing the problem.

Is this a normal wear and tear issue? I bought the rifle used from a buddy that supposedely only put 150 rounds through it.

Thanks again.

I kinda hate to piggyback here and haven't had a chance to check the bolt head dimensions on my 12BVSS in 22-250. It tends to drop cases early instead of kicking em out. Is there a way to buy a bolt head with tighter tolerances ? Any particular aftermarket supplier?
Any help appreciated.

Try a new extractor.Even new guns have had this problem.

SSS has the new button head ejector that holds pressure on the case longer. Make sure the hole is clean and the ejector moves freely. new extractor with larger detent ball. Helped mine a lot.. Are you listening Savage???
