15 year old 110 7mm questions??

I am working a trade for a 15 yr old one owner model 110 7mm. My question is what trigger is in it and will I be able to just buy a barrel and swap like the newer 110's? Been wanting to build something for a while and thinking about using this action.

It should have the old three screw trigger. What caliber are you considering? Going from a belted magnum to a standard .473" diameter case will require a bolt head and magazine/follower change along with the barrel.

It may be the two screw trigger. As Savage was having financial troubles along that time, they cut some corners and began putting the two screw on most rifles. The three screw trigger was put on varmint and tactical rifles during that era (I think).

It has the easy to change trigger! ;) If it is only 15 year old you have the same basic gun they made for years. The original 110 from the beginning years uses a different bolt head and barrel.

If it is the action that is pictured, it is more than 15 years old, That action predates 1966. (1958-66.) It is similare to newer production, but it has its diferences, such as the trigger the bolt head, and the barrel. It would be my last choice in something to build. Guns built after 1966 share a common ground with the newer production guns.

Then I would say it is safe to say it is a good builder. Another thing to watch for, look at the scope mounts make sure that they are not part of the reciever. Some Savage had the bases soldered on, and where not drilled and taped, and some the reciever was cast, and they made the bases 1 piece into the reciever. They can pose a problem when mounting some scope optics. If the gun is 10-15 years old this should not be a problem, this is usualy found in the 70's-80's guns.
Last thing to check for is measure the distance between the action screws, Savage made some first generation short actions and they uses a diferent screw spacing, wich makes finding a stock a chore. With it being a 7 mag, this will not be an issue, but something to keep in mind if you look further.

How can I tell age by serial#


Find maddog and PM the number, he can tell you the year and month it was made. The first letter tells was series it is. I am willing to bet it is an F.

Where should the safety be if it's only 15-16 years old. What other things would tell me it's older? If its not a good shooter I want to build a custom 7mm or 300 wm so want to make sure it's not just another horse trading item...lol thanks

All Safetys are in the tang.

syn stock. probable looking at a control round feed bolt head rather then the very early head.

Gun is in great shape. 3 screw trigger feels like it has been adjusted some. Thanks for the help. Is the rear action bolt suppose to have a brass pillar like the forward?
