Yes, you need a scope base. Do not get a one piece base for a Savage Long or Short Action because the length you need for the Axis is inbetween those two. EGW (see banner ad above or try http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Savage_Axis_Edge_Picatinny_Rail_Mount_p/egw-418.htm) has scope bases specifically for the Axis, and I believe there are others as well.

IIRC, you can use standard Savage round-back two piece bases on the Axis action but I'd appreciate it if someone with a better memory than me would please confirm or deny that.

This one is cheaper. I did the math, this is for an AXIS.

If you want very nice machined steel, Weaver type, bases with silver finish, Warne makes machined "M" bases front and back are M902S for Electroless Nickel finish. If extension needed for compact scope or turret clearance use M905S or M904S (shorter), in front or rear position.

Great thread, very informative
Can anyone tell me the part number for a weaver 1 piece that will be good for my Axis?

Basic considerations:
Front mounting screws. Make sure they are not too long. If the forward screw is too long, it will bottom out in the barrel threads and feel tight but won't be snugging the mount down to the receiver. If the rearmost front mounting screw is too long, it will interfere/bind as you turn the bolt.

Depending on your scope and your stance and eyes, the front of the scope might bump into a long Weaver or Picatinny style rail before the scope is far enough toward the rear to provide the eye relief that you need. In that case you might have to shorten the front of the rail.

When you mount your rings, push the crossbolts forward against the base to take up slack.

If you are not using Burris Signature Zee rings, you should make sure your rings are aligned true and lap them if necessary.

I hope this helps.

CRAP LINK! Are you trolling!!!
Please calm down. Your post is not too helpful. Perhaps you could give leadpoison the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the bad link was an honest mistake.
With about 30 seconds worth of Google-Fu, you could have found out that the correct link was http://www.dnzproducts.com. Then you could have posted it and been the hero.

I really like the EGW rail with Weaver rings. I have better clearance between the scope and bolt than with a one piece mount.
