Thanks, but I was thinking of a more entry level rifle--just to start, to find out if I like the sport.

Look into a Mark II BV or an FV both shoot real well.Mine both will shoot 3/8th to 1/4 inch groups.I use the FV in our club 50yds silhouette matches.

This depends on if you want to shoot the rifle in both Hunter class and Standard class. If you want one rifle that qualifies for both classes then you basically need a rifle that meets all of the Hunter class regulations.

If you are only going to shoot it in the standard class then you can go with the varmint barrels and thumbholes if that is what you like.

Virtually any of the Savage rimfires are capable of acceptable accuracy for Rimfire silhouette. Minimum accuracy off the bench at 100 meters is 1" to 1.25" five shot groups. Less than 1" is even better though. If a rifle is not capable of 1.25" or better at 100meters then you will be "chasing" your misses, not knowing if the miss was your fault or the gun... or the wind. :P

So you have to decide, do you want one gun that you can shoot in both classes, or do you want a Standard class only gun?
