Slotted action screws

I picked up a Savage 110 .270 at the Gun and Pawn I work at. The previous owner sold it because the accuracy went south. It looked like a typical package rifle with the cheap mounts, rings and scope. The only difference is a Boyd's laminate stock. I ended up buying it from the shop for a decent price. Breaking it down at home I discovered it had slotted action screws? When did Savage use these, if ever? The BAS is the current hex head, trigger is the two screw and the follower has the newer coil spring. Receiver is the older flat rear.

back before they discovered Allen screws. If the stock was changed, why not the screws?

I just bought a old 112v single shot with factory stock and slotted action screws. Im getting a new barrel and having the action bedded. I will ask my smith to use allen screws..

The sloted screws was used up into the late 1980's early 1990's.

Might be the rifle originally had a plastic stock? Changing to a wood or laminate stock requires longer screws than plastic. FWIW Brownells sells longer slotted screws for Savage.
