I am finishing up my first build. Savage Target Action. I got a smoking deal on a barrel. But now Im not sure. after much reading, maybe its too long? 27" Criterion barrel, and I sent it to SSS and had a brake installed. This is a looong gun ;D twist is 8.

with this twist and barrel length, can someone give me a good starting point. I have a box of Lapua brass. not sure what round and powder combo. this is also a brand new barrel so i need to break it in. I want to use this gun for 1-500 yard groundhog plinking. Any thoughts for a ammo starting point?

Standard Criterion length is 26" can't see the 27" being a problem unless you had a real thin BBL contour w/ a brake hanging out on the end. SSS will do ya' proud. +1 on drybeans advice

There is a ton of diferent opinions on barrel length, some people like 30 inch barrels. With a 27 I say your in the ball park, and if you dont like it, you can always cut it down, or it gives you a bit of options if you decide to rechamber the barrel.

With a 8 twsit BR 105-108 gr bullets with around 30 grs of varget seem to be a good match. My CBI loves 107 SMKs

You made a good choice on the barrel! I don't know where the questioning came from!

Shoot it and have fun!

You will find tons of load info, just do a search!

Patricks info above probably will be your best start!

This might be an area to study a little

My 6mm BR Lothar Walther barrel is 28" but w/o a brake. I have no problems with that length.

For target work use the 100+grain bullets. For varmint I would try the 87 grain V-max. Should make for some good red mist. I have been using Ramshot Hunter in almost everything lately. Similar to H4831 but meters like salt.
