Just picked up a pre-accutrigger model 11 w/ DBM in .308, what I'm thinking of doing is having the barrel cut down to 16-17" and threaded. Has anyone done anything like this, and how did it turn out? I think it will make for a very handy set up and still be capable of accurate shots to about 600m. If this doesn't work out then I will go with my original plan of a 20"threaded varmint. My thinking is the shortening of the factory sporter will stiffen it a bit, and maybe help with the fliers that occur after 3-4 shots.
What say ye?
Thanks for any input.
Eric

The savage striker can do it with a short barrel, so why not.

Mine is cut to 20", not threaded. It's a hunting rig, and once I got to 1.5" groups I quit looking. I was looking for an accurate load with lead free bullets. It hated the 150gr TSX but likes the 150 Nosler Etip. I have some 130gr TSX's to try out as well. The 20" barrel makes for a fast handling rifle.

Mine is holding 3 on top of eachother then 1 opens it to about 1.25". Just lookng to lose the fliers. Might help with better ammo too. 150fmj's are not xactly known for their accuracy.

If that barrel is a sporter wgt factory barrel that last shot flyer may be the barrel heating up just enough to touch the stock and cause those flyers. Worth checking. For yrs I hunted with a custom Mauser 7x57 with an 18 1/2 inch barrel with no problems. What velocity loss was not important in the woodlands where shots are short. Very handy rifle.

Heres mine with a 18" light varmint contour barrel(.750" @ muzzle). I added the brake e and the total length is about 19.75". Mine shot 1/2-3/4 groups at 100yds. Never did chrono it to see how much velocity loss there was over a 24" barrel though. This rifle was very well balanced and easy to carry, weighing just under 9lbs as pictured.

Just be careful and dont go too short. By law the barrel has to be atleast 16" long and have a total gun length(buttpad to muzzle) of atleast 26". Measure how long the rifle is now and then you'll know how much you can legally take off of it.

I did a 6br and 308 to 18" threaded for my suppressor doing subsonic loads it was 1" or better. I havnt tried hot loads for better accuracy but im sure they would do ok.

Just shipped my 308 10fcp to GAP to have it cut to 18" and have a badger FTE brake put on.

Looking forward to getting it back, should be a blast...

Thanks for the replies. Now I need to find out if the sporter will have enough meat to thread at 16-17".
Thanks.

What is George charging you for that, if you don't mind my asking?

Here is my daughters, 14.5 inch with fixed brake to make legal length. She has shot 600yd fclass with it and it holds right around .5 5 shot groups with 130 barnes and 175smk loads.http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu16/soumigirl/short308001.jpg
