It seems as though the 7mm-08 really shines with 140/160 bullets seated out past SA mag length. Has anyone built a 7mm-08 repeater off of a long action to take advantage of this long COL? Tried a search sorry if this has been coverd.

I'm running a 243 on a staggered feed long action that was a 30-06. I use the 30-06 magazine, works great. You won't have any problems using those long slippery bullets.

I'm running a 7mm-08 on a long action but, I'm using a "Fred Sled" to single feed the rounds as I want the freedom of seating to or into the lands and not worry if they will fit a mag box.

The 7mm-08 really shines if you use Reloader 15. ::)

Thanks for the replies. Looking at building a hunting rifle off of a 200 action. Will the newer cf mags cycle a 7mm-08 like the stagger feeds would? Also what is max COL in a SA blind mag?

I put the caliper on it and came up with 3.025 back to front, but would not go that long I think there is some spring flex that hold the mag in the stock. I think you could go 3.0 inches. I have not put the Stoney Point to it but I load SGK 140's to 2.800 with a 24" 1-9 standard profile Shaw and it outshoots target rifles at 100. I ground the factory lugs flat, honed the barrel nut, worked the trigger, sat it in the factory plastic stock and torqued it to 30 in/lb's. It's scary accurate.

Amen to that! With bullets in the 162/168 grain weight, RL-17 is another performer.

Check your barrel throat before loading your rounds too long. The chamber on my 7mm-08 short action Model 16 with a Douglas barrel will take a maximum COL of 2.900" using Hornaday 154 gr tipped spitzers loaded 0.02" off the lands as determined by using a Hornady LNL OAL gauge. At that COL the magazine will take and feed the rounds and the action will eject a loaded round. I couldn't load these cartridges any longer without jamming the bullet into the rifling and a long action wouldn't make any difference.

I built my .260 Rem on a Stevens 200 SA that was a .243. It is one of the center-feed actions not a stagger feed. I shoot the 140gr Bergers and I can seat them out further than the lands will allow and they still feed through the mag. When I seat them just onto the lands they feed no problem. Not sure why you wouldn't be able to do this with a 7mm-08?
