Well I finally got a good chance to shoot my 260 build that I did off the 110 action with a 24” E.R.Shaw barrel.
Loaded up 18 rounds all shot at 100 yards
3 with 44.0gr of H4831sc and 130 gr Nosler Accu-bond (NAB) seated @2.978 = a 2.5” group
3 with 44.5 gr of H4831sc and 130 NAB same seated depth = 2” group
3 with 45.0 gr of H4831sc and 130 NAB same depth= 1.95” group

3 with 43.0gr of IMR 4350 and 130 NAB same depth =1.25” group *********
3 with 44.0gr of IMR 4350 and 130 NAB same depth = 1.50” group

3 with 40.0 gr of RL 15 and a 120 nolser balstic tip seated to 2.975 = a 1.75” group

also there was a decent wind today id say no more than 20 mph gusts

was this with a sporter or varmint barrel? Just wondering what I may be able to expect from mine.

I don't know anything about Shaw barrels or the 130gr Accubond but 2.97" OAL seems awfully long to me for a bullet with a tangent (standard) ogive vs. the "narrower" secant VLD style ogive.

For comparison's sake, in my Criterion 260 barrel 2.95" OAL touches the lands with the 130 Berger VLD, 2.90" OAL with the 140 A-Max, and 2.87" with the 130 Norma Golden.

brain going faster than fingers or maybe teh other way round.

I'm familiar with that ;D

You say your magazine will only let you load to 2.80"? That stinks...

maybe a tiny bit longer but not much when i ordered the new mag well and follower i messed up and ordered one for a SA not a LA forgetting what i was working with.

im wanting a SSS fluted bolt body so if i tear the bolt apart i might order the longer mag well.
so i might be asking for help on a bolt disassembly and reassembly in the future.

Yes, 44 grains at the lands 2800fps and no signs of pressure using 243 brass.

Sorry, 140 grain Nosler AB's and Speer Deep Curl hunting bullets. I had good luck jamming the lands. Tight group and same POI both bullets but some heaavy recoil. I figured I was overpressuring but no signs. To be honest I think my next loads will be 42 grains and work around that.

Cooker900,
I might have the same barrel as you and have just purchased a second one..Mine is the 24" E.R. Shaw stainless 1:9 that Midway offers as a kit screwed in a 110 LA....I also have a long action Shilen barreled .260 also in a 110...After this next Stevens build there will be three LA .260s in the safe...

I tried 4 different bullets and only two powders during load development including 123 gr Scenars, 123 gr Amax, 129 gr SSTs and 130 gr. VLDs pushed by H4831sc or IMR 4350....Lots of good results in both rifles except for the 129 gr SSTs (quit trying before the box was empty.. I mean bad).

I have had good luck with 130 Bergers at 2.915 (about .020 off) coal and 123 Amax at 2.815 (again about .020 off) coal the Bergers love 44.4 grains of H4831 SC at 2775 and the Amax like 43 grs. of IMR 4350 at 2925....Both bullets shoot under 1/2 MOA out to 400+ yards and both still shoot under 3/4 minutes at 600 yards....although I have only shot them at 600 on two trips to the range....I found it best to limit the groups to three with the Shaw as they start to spread as the barrel warms...I have a 100 yard range at home so most of the development was done here....

The Shaw barrel started cleaning well in less than 100 rounds but now has about 500 down the tube after load development...I hope I learned a little and the new one shoots better right out of the box (ha-ha)....

Mine are mounted on a long actions (as the new one will be) but yours might accept the 2.815 COAL of the Amax or something close to that...The Amax bullets are relatively cheap and shoot real well (several one ragged hole groups at 100)...The Amax is not a hunting bullet but did the trick on a 200 lb muley in WY for me this year at 310+ yds never got out of its bed.
The same gun found a couple of 8 pt. whitetails in MN & WI with the 130 Bergers all DRT....

I didn't try the Bergers much deeper because they shot well at .020 and .015 and I didn't want to give up much more powder capacity....But in my Douglas barreled 25-06 I found that 115 Bergers shot the best at between .040 & .100 off the lands...It is possible you may be able to sink them in deep enough to fit in your magazine and still shoot well....

I tried the 129 Hornady SSTs and could not get them to shoot in either the Shaw nor the 26" varmint Shilen with either powder at any distance from the lands jammed or jumped....It seems that some barrels may not like a certain bullet/powder combination and maybe that is the case with your ACBs....

By comparison the 1:8 Shilen also likes the 130 Bergers at the same COAL as the Shaw (only the throat is a hair shorter in the Shilen, so they are about .015 off the lands)....It also will shoot the Amax load real nice.

These were my first .260s and it took a while to find what they like but the persistence paid off in the end..
Good luck with yours and keep us posted...I am starting my next build with a Stevens and the Shaw in the next couple of weeks and might be asking your help when I start working up a load for it...

Good Shooting,
Randy

wow thnaks guys

yes mine was theh kit from midway.
and ill help out if i can like you so far my best results are with the IMR 4350. the main reason i ask about the RL 22 is that is the last slow powder i i have so i figured why not try it.

and i am only doing 3 shots as well just because thats all i have ever done.

H-4350 works good, rl 17, superformance with 130 vld 3050 out of 26 encore shaw barrel.

I've had best accuracy and consistancy with H4350 when compared to H4831 and other powders in a 260 20" 1:8 twist Savage factory barrel, or 22" 1:9 twist Shaw barrel. The 130 gr Berger's and Accubonds shot best with H4350. The same was observed with Sierra 140 gr GK's and H4350. RL19 showed real promise with 120 gr Nosler BT's, 125 gr Partitions and 120 gr Sierra PRO Hunters. But I ran out of RL-19 before I got to 130 and 140 gr bullets. I've settled on H4350 and 130 gr Bergers @ 0.010" off lands as a hunting load for my 20" Savage LWH in 260.

Based on what I have observed and read, It seems H4350, a Hodgen Extreme Powder is hard to beat in a 260. Never tried RL-22 or H414 which are the other powders most often metioned with H4831 as working well with the 260. Finally found a home for the bottle of RL-17 in my 6.5x284 with 140 gr Bergers.
