I am trying to plan a 7/300mm WSM build on a Savage action. With the bullet(s) I want to try, I need a COAL as close to 3.1" as I can get to seat the bullets out to a length that puts the case-neck shoulder juntion behind the bearing surface of the bullet and also maximizes powder capacity.

I am willing to work with whatever bottom metal is required, but I would like to be able to feed reliably and eject un-fired rounds.

Can I make this work with a savage short action, or are my requirements simply too long?

If you single load it is possible. Using a magazine is a different story.

I measured the inside of a short action mag was on a (300WSM), and it measured at 2.988" so the COL you want will not fit in the short action mag.

I'm much more familiar with remington (clone) actions than I am with Savages; I know with the rem style there are a number of aftermarket makers of bottom metal and mags that are longer than standard. ... does anything similar exist that is compatible with the savage platform.

And would I be correct to assume that the savage blind mag boxes and hinged floor plate systems are of the same dimensions that CSAM was kind enough to provide for the detachable mag boxes.
