I have one built on a stevens 200 action in the camo stock with a er shaw barrel and I love it, it shoots a honest .75 3 shot groups at 100 yds using 200gr combined tech bt's and BL-C 2. Like I said I love it probably my favorite hunting rifle/caliber.

Someone was selling a barrel on THF and I looked this up.

Had one back in the 70's It shot real well with 210 n0slers. Only thingI recall shooting with it was a small blacktail buck. Hit him in yhe hip pocket and it came out the front of his chrst. He was dead right there. As I recall if you had one of those loaded proper you would not need a .338 win mag for anything,

Great info here guys thanks for sharing! I would love to have the caliber just to play with, i have a 7 Mag that i use for my heavy stuff, 25-06 for the lighter stuff and after that its in the 22's ;). Would like to still have it, I have two factory 30-06 bbls that wont sell so i had to think about what i could do with em....

I built one on a mauser action a few years ago and love it.Shoots great.! I ackley improved it- not so much for any velocity increase but it nearly eliminates case stretching. I installed a timney trigger, muzzle brake, new safety, thumbhole stock. It's a great rig.! I also have a 7 mag and enjoy shooting the 338-06 a lot more than the 7 mag. it dosent have a lot of recoil and has plenty of power for most anything you will want to hunt. Mine is going to Ontario with me this summer on a bear hunt and will no doubt get the job done if I am able to have a shot opportunity.

I rebarreled a 110E (laminate) w/ a heavy magnum-tapered ER Shaw tube & had it shortened to 22" w/ a recessed target crown, then parkerized & coated it w/ brushed stainless steel cerakote. I topped it w/ Warne Maxima rings and a Bushnell 3200 2-7x 32mm w/ firefly reticle.

It shot extraordinarily (1-1.5 MOA) well w/ everything I tested from the 180 gr NBT (@ approx 2900 fps, loaded w/ RL15 to take the doe in the pic, which preciptated the celebratory cigar pictured w/ a loaded cartridge) all the way up to 250 gr Barnes "O" bullets w/ Ramshot Hunter (approx 2600 fps, pictured between 30-06 & 200 gr 30 cal & 9.3x57 w/ 286 gr). The original deer load I put together was one I called "mo stomp," (pictured w/ chrono) as it was a 200 gr Hot Cor over a mild load of RL15 for about 2500 fps and had given me my first ever GENIUNE 1-hole group.

The 110 I have was originally a 270 WCF and I still have the factory barrel which I've never shot (DON'T SHOOT THE DONOR!!) and the change over was extremely easy. I've since sold that tube but kinda wish I hadn't. That cartridge is extraordinarily versatile, and if you compare the ROI it produces to that of the Win Mag it really is a no brainer... I calculated it once and IIRC the WM has 4% more velocity for 18% more propellent? Crazy efficiency in the '06... and it didn't kick the daylights out of me... although much of the reason I sold it was that it was a bit heavy for carrying up hill & dale for elk, which was its imagined purpose.

I bet the ackley'd case looks awesome! Haha course i am an ackley fan....I love the pics! Thanks for sharing! I think if i ever have some extra time and a few extra dollars, i will have to build one.....one nice thing about building off the 06 cartridge is there is allways plenty of em to be found! Thanks again!

Yeah I have a wonderfully handy Smith-Corona built 03-A3 that I'm strongly considering having rebored to 338 so I can have one of these again. It is an incredibly versatile cartridge; if you're going after big game only, I'd dare say it is even more versatile than the Springfield which is high praise from me, a HUGE fan of that old warbird!

I might be able to help here.... I'm building a .338-06 off a Model 111 Centerfeed, DBM, Rifle Basics Trigger. The barrel is a Shilen Select, 26 in, Varmint. The stock will be a fully block bedded Houge Over molded with DBM. I'm still looking at scopes, but I think I'm going to run with the Nikon Monarch 3-12 BDC.

Now to work up a load with Power Pro 2000 or 3000 and make that monster SCREAM!!!!!! Oh, and add some weight to it ;D

Pics will be following.... :o

Oh, and add some weight to it ;D

I look forward to pics.

Seriously... don't worry about adding weight. Put a good recoil pad on it and they're only about the level of a 30-06 Spfd. That heavily-tapered barrel will cut down even further from what I experienced w/ mine. You'll be fine.

I would HIGHLY recommend Ramshot Hunter w/ 225s & heavier...

my son built one on a rem with an old Lebounty cut rifled barrel. it shoots great with 250 partitions. with a mini break the recoil is less than a 270. he hasnt had a chance to kill anything with it yet as he has been in Afg the last 2 hunting seasons. he is hoping for a trip to Alaska and get a cheap vetrian tag and try it out on a moose.

Its a real sledgehammer on game.
If you want to shoot a deer or hog and have it drop pretty much where it stands its good to go.

From 160 gr TTSX up to 250 gr roundnose.
Witht he 338-06 you can get about 3200-3250 FPS out of the 160 gr TTSX so its a real flat shooter.
160 TTSX at 3200 will shoot inside 5" out to 290 yards.

Load it down to 2850 or so, less recoil and its still a slegdehammer and way overkill for deer.
Shot a deer at 2850 last year and it blew out a softball size lung balloon out of the other side. Ran about 5 yards and piled up.

Devastating on hogs.
A few years ago had a 19" 338-284 barrel that I sold and now getting that barrel back.
Same ballistics as a 338-06.

Ran 210 gr TTSX bullets in it at about 2600. Shot several hogs with it, and it just piles them up DRT.
Yoketransport bought that 338-284 barrel from me and I think it was his father in law that used it loaded
with 185gr TTSX bullets and offed a 785# cow elk at 80 yards. Down the hill and pretty much DRT.

250 gr roundnose full tilt loads have plenty of recoil.

160 gr moderate loads recoil about like a 30-06
