I just bought a axis xp in 30 06. When I took it to the range, it wouldn't fire a round. The firing pin was barely making a dent in the primer. I figured out how to get the bolt apart and there are two springs and a spacer/washer thing inside, and they don't seat together very well. The spacer is like one wound of a spring but has really rough edge where the coil meets. the spring that holds the cocking lug thing is not flat on the end but really crocked compared to the firing pin (ie not perpendicular). And the back spring is flat on both ends but looks really rough on boths ends like someone made it from a normal spring. I think this is the cause of the problem.

i've never taken a bolt apart, and cannot give you any info for the DIY repair.

but the first thing I would have done would have been a call to Savage...

granted it's never good to have a problem like this in the first place, they have done well to make sure that guns are fixed quickly and back in your hand.

Check your firing pin protrusion. It could be short, or there is something in the bolt preventing it from going full travel.

Thanks Guys. I got the bolt apart and after cleaning up the springs, firing pin and putting them back together. The protrusion of the firing pin is fine and nothing is holding it back without the springs/spacer installed. The rifle works now. But the whole spring/spacer thing is really cheesy looking and I'm not sure I trust its reliability in the long run. Sending it back is a good idea but chances are they will just but the same springs in it. And I kind of wanted to know what was going on inside the bolt and see for myself what the problem was.

On a positive note the rifle put 5 rounds within an inch @ 100 yards from a bench using a bi pod. Also the recoil pad on the rifle works really well. The trigger however wasn't helping matters, and I may have to tweak it a little.

Well my Axis hasn't had any more trouble. In fact it has not FTF again.

I shot these groups today, at 100yds.

This was with cheap 1$ a round 150gr SP crap. I hope you can make out in the picture that there are three shots on the paper.

This was with the kind of ammo the owners manual says Savage uses to test the rifle, and cost almost double the $ 168 gr federal sierra matchking BTHP

I think I know which I will use at the up coming turkey shoot this weekend.
