A buddy of mine picked up a used hornet from a store. After he had it home he noticed some marks on the very back of the chamber (where the back end of the barell is cone shaped). Apparently someone got a case stuck in the chamber and tried to pry it out with something. Now there are some sharp burrs on the very back where the rim of the case sits against. Also there must be some burrs pushed into the chamber because he was getting some scratches on the brass.

We are thinking he can stone the burrs off with something or take it to his gunsmith to do that. I would think you can't take too much material from that surface or it could change the head space.

Are these barrels threaded in ? The ideal way to fix this would be to take the barell off but I don't think that is something that we could do ourselves ??

It doesnt sound too serious to me. If the gouges are at the very rear near where the rim of the cartridge rests just stone it lightly to remove burrs. Take a dowel about a foot long, put a split in one end and add some very fine emery paper, like a 400 to 600 grit by puting it in the split. Insert it into the chamber and attach the dowel to an electric drill. Give it a short burst with the drill, just enough to polish out any burrs. Try it and check the brass again. It should show some improvement. If not your next bet is a good gunsmith.

Ellobo,
He did exactly that , about a week ago. When he chambers the brass now, it is no longer getting gouged by the burrs. And he had it out recently doing some load testing and getting great results using lil gun and barnes 30 gr varmint grenades.

Make sure he tries small PISTOL primers in the Hornet.

Rifle primers get the bullet moving before the powder gets lit and accuracy suffers. Try it, you will like it.
