I am building a deer rifle this winter and am shopping barrels right now. Where this gun will be used the longest shot possibility is 350yards. I found a used stainless Savage take off barrel (non fluted) in the caliber I want delivered for $75 or the ideal barrel that I would want (fluted SS) from savage-barrels.com for $425 plus shipping. My question is at the distances i hunt would it be worth it to drop the extra $350 on the premium barrel or just go with the Savage barrel?

I would personally go with the cheaper of the two. Savage makes great barrels and for that distance it will kill a deer size target all day long. Save the money for something that will help you kill that bomber everyone is looking for. Good luck

If it is strictly a hunting gun I would go with the Savage takeoff barrel and spend the extra money on nicer optics, stock, reloading equipement, etc.

I agree if for hunting at the range stated i would go with a factory barrel but i would look around and see if i could find a takeoff barrel in the caliber you are wanting instead of a used barrel. I will cost a little more but still a lot cheaper than the one from savage barrels.

Picking which barrel, is kind of like dating. Some dates are great, some not. Just depends on a little luck.

Thanks guys, you all confirmed what my gut was telling me to do. That $350 difference will go towards the scope

That's got to be one of the smartest things I've ever read on the internet.
