First post for me here. I've got a Savage Model 111 chambered in 30-06. Currently has no mods but looking into getting a Choate Sniper stock and a heavy/bull barrel. While at it I want to start reloading on my own. With this caliber I just don't see getting the groups I want with the typical over the counter Core Locts and so on. After searching around on Cabelas site and internet searches I can't find much for bullets on the 30-06 other than some company selling OLD bullets that have been pulled from old military leftovers. I want something that will be accurate, not reused stuff thats 50+ years old.

Now, while doing my internet searches I found that the 30-06 and the .308 are the same bullet and you can load the .308 in a 30-06 case. Anyone have experience with this? Just seen it on one website so I need a little more reassurement than that before I go that direction.

On a side note, anyone got a recommendation on where to look some barrels like mentioned above?

Thanks for any and all input!

get the ABC's of reloading and read it, theres a lot of info in there that you need to know. Yes the 30-06 and 308 both use 30 cal bullets.

Welcome to the forum.

For starters the bullets you're looking at won't produce the desired results. Start looking at the 168gr match and go from there. The 30-06 is a proven round with a lot of potential, but you will never see it with mediocre hunting rounds. Can you elaborate on what you want this rifle to do specifically? Is this going to be a target rig, a hunting rig, or something in between?

Wow, thanks for the quick replies.

This is currently my deer rifle but looking to set it up more for target shooting. Most rounds will be 100- 300 yards with the occasional 500 play days. Once I drop this kind of money into it on top of what I paid for it I doub't it will see a much if no any hunting. It will give me a reason to buy another deer rifle this year! ;D

I plan to do alot of research before I load my own but looking into what others are doing/using. I've never reloaded before but I have 2 friends who do and my father inlaw who does. As far as I know none of them have reloaded this specific cartridge though.

Reloading for any rifle really isn't that hard, especially for a bolt gun. I have a similar setup to what you are looking at getting except in 308 winchester. 27" Douglas barrel, Choate UV stock, SSS T&T job, SSS Competition Trigger, SSS recoil lug, Millet 6-25x56 buck gold scope with weaver grand slam rings.

The 30 caliber probably has the best bullet selection of any caliber. As stated, reloading the 30-06 is not hard. Pick up a number or loading manuals and read all the information provided. I started that way more than 40 years ago.

As far as reloading components,
I am using hornady 150 grain sst bullets, and varget for powder out of my rem 700 mountain rifle in 30-06.
The sst bullets have a good balistic coefficient for long range shooting as well as they will put a deer down.
And they are priced good comparing them to other bullets. As stated above , there are many components available for 30 cal reloading.

Most important thing is getting a reloading manual, and reading the info in the front of the book. It will give you a good understanding of what is going on when you pull the trigger. It would make a good x-mas gift for you :).

youll be suprised how much there is to know about making that little bullet. I was raised up reloading everything we shot, pistols, rifles, shotguns and even made my own arrows for my bows. But I still learn new things everytime I read one of those books

ive got almost the same rifle, go get a box of 150 sst light mag loads and shoot them with a good scope and steady rest should shoot great give your barrel time to cool! while you're getting some trigger time talk to the guys at the ranges and people that reload that way you have a better understanding of what it is and takes and by the time you have aquired help, or all the components and knowledge to use said components you have plenty of once fired good brass to start with.
