Hey Guys, I am new to this forum (and all forums for that matter) and have a burning desire to own a rifle in Hornady's new .17 Hornet. I know it is a knock off of the .17 ackley but the availability of commercial ammo is very handy. I have an older Stevens model 342 22 hornet as a base so I guess my big question is, Can I get a new barrel for this rifle chambered for the .17 Hornet and is the conversion process similar to swapping calibers\barrels on a 110?

yes, but your going to have to PAY some one to make your barrel. the 110 wrench will not fit a 342. and I am not aware of any one making one.

Yep - straight custom job. Buy a 17 cal barrel blank and find a smith that can turn it down and thread it for the 340 action etc.

I would wait till the new model 25's come out - probably cheaper and certainly a better rifle when you are said and done.

The dimensions for the 17 HH arnt out just yet, I have an email out to Pacific as soon as they get them I'm going to have a reamer ground. The easy way to go would be to find a take off barrel from just about any bolt gun, the 342/340 barrel is kind of small so a take off barrel can be turned down cut back and rethreaded. In order to get the barrel nut off all you need is a 1-3/16" wrench slide it over the nut cut some 1/8" welding rod or brassing rod in 3/4" inch chunks all you need is four of them. Slide the wrench over the nut slide the short chunks of wire into the slots in between nut and wrench. Of course you need the barrel or action clamped down. What I'm describing here is what I did to an 840 to build a 17 Fire Ball, came our great, shoots great and I figure I have less than $250 in a 17 FB.

Thats what I thought. Thanks for the input. I knew that the model 25's were scheduled to be released soon but I didn't really want to shell out that much cash for a casual varminter\pelt gun. But it would be a much better gun and my 22 hornet would still be intact. Once again, thanks for the help.
