Stupid question but try to answer anyway

On a model 10 in .308 the instructions explain how to install and remove the bolt from the receiver.
But the instructions doesn't say what position the safety has to be in to either remove or install the bolt.
So does it matter which position the safety is in?
I would think the safety has to be in the off position as you need to pull the trigger all the way back while pressing down the cocking indicator to install or remove the bolt.
So can you perform this operation with the safety engaged?

The safety has to be off.

But don't pull on the trigger until the bolt handle is lifted and the bolt retracted. Pulling on the trigger before that is unsafe gun handling practice.

You answered your own question. If the trigger must be pulled, and a safety prevents it.....
