Twist rate

What twist for 85-100 Gr. hunting bullets in a 6mm Remington. I've done alot of reading but most everything for that bullet range is for target bullets. Shilen's website says 1-10. I think this would be a little loose but I don't want to over-stabilize too much. Maybe 1-9? What do you guys think? I may AI it in the future but not now.

1 in 9.5" I believe is used on the 243. 1 in 10 would work fine.

A 1-8" would be fine. I'm shooting 87 gr Vmax's out of my Lothar Walther bbl in 243 Win, and it's 1-8". It's always better to err on the fast side than the slow side. Most (not all, but most) modern bullets won't come apart in a fast twist barrel like the older bullets did. There are exceptions, but those are usually bullets designed for slow cartridges, like .22 Hornet, and 30-30, etc.

If you were contemplating "AI", then I would surely go 1-8". It just opens up much more versatility for you with that cartridge.

SAAMI standard for the 6mm Rem is 1:9. It is 1:10 for the .243. Either shoot those bullets just fine. The 1:9.25" twist that Savage uses for the .243 does just fine with 55 and 58gn pills at silly speeds. Those are "fragile" varmint bullets as opposed to the tough bonded bullets that you're talking about. No reason to worry about them coming apart. The idea of "overstabilization" is a myth.

1-8 it is. gunshack had an er shaw that i bought. I've not used their barrels before. I have shilen, douglas, and pac-nor but never a shaw. I figure it couldn't hurt to try them out on a hunting barrel at that price. We will see.

You should be happy with the Shaw barrel. They aren't super premium bench rest quality barrels but don't cost like them either. They do have a good reputation for accuracy and shoud make a fine hunting/vamint rifle.

After 25 rounds of load development, I got an moa group at a 100 using 85 grain hpbt gamekings and 4831sc. Next up is 100 grain sp gamekings. We will see. I don't think that's bad after only 25 down the tube. They were loaded to book oal since I didn't have a fired case to check an oal measurement. Now a case is drilled and tapped. Already have the 100's loaded so after that, I'll start playing with the depth.
