I an currently looking to upgrade the barrel on my savage 110 and have reached a dilemma as to what profile and length I want to go with. I definitely want somethin heavier than stock and longer than the 24" I have to better my velocities. Have heard some purty good claims on guys with the 28" barrels and am leaning towards the 28-30". I will occasionally hunt with this rifle however It won't be carried a lot I have a couple clear cuts and a few highlines I can stretch the legs on from a box stand. I plan mostly to do long range shooting mostly informal till I get in the groove of things and feel like the extra heft and length would be an asset to this. Already have decided on brand so just recommendation on lengths and profiles please. Thanks in advance.

In a 7MM Magnum I wouldn't do anything less than 26". If you plan on using it for hunting, 28-30" is a bit long.
As far as contours go long range is better with a heavy contour like 1" at the muzzle but it ain't so hot for hunting....depends on what you want.

If you shoot 168g Berger VLD's like I do you will be very impressed with the ballistics of the 7 Mag.
With a BC of .617 and a muzzle velocity of 2900 you are still moving at 1600fps at 1000. Not too shabby.
Set 3.8" high at 100 you are -238" at 1000. Not too shabby either.

Pm received and returned. I really am leaning toward a 30" med or heavy palma contour. And have seen one 7 mag with a 32" barrel makin some claims of very serious velocities. Got me thinkin hard just don't want to heavy a barrel for my action.

I also shoot the 168 gr hunting vlds out of my factory barrel with excellent results plenty of sub .500" groups with most under .450" 3 shot. Just think the better velocities from the longer barrel would sweeten the pot a bit.
