Hey all, just ordering my first Savage- the Axis in .223

I have a Redfield 4x12x40 and I have a DNZ Game Reaper one piece scope mount ordered for it- the low model.

My question is will low mounts work for the 40mm size scope? I have medium hight mounts on all my other rifles. Most places i checked say yes but i didn't find this forum till after i placed my order.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have a 116 FCSS (long action) with a Ken Farrell base. My 3-9x42 scope with 30 mm tube clears the base by about 1/16 inch with low rings. The closest point is the front edge of the base with the middle of the objective bell.

I put a Nikon Protstaff 3x9x40 on my 110 using the DNZ reaper low mounts. The only problem I ran into was the magnification dial was rubbing the rear mount. I filed a little bit for clearance and everything fit well. I didn't want to go medium mounts and there was plenty of material. I wasn't worried about weakening it too much.

Well I got her all mounted up and took her to the range yesterday and WOW ;D!!! Fired off 6 rounds of cheap stuff to get dialed in and then got the elevation right with a few rounds of V-Max and with my final 3 shots i had a 3-shot group touching, as in almost one ragged hole, in the upper right quarter of a 2-inch diameter bullseye. So elevation is now perfect at around 1.5 inches high at 100 yds. ON the next outing i just need to get the windage fine tuned a bit and i am set for 300yds 8)- and hopefully more with more range time. I think i am dialed in well enough now for coyotes- which will be my main target of opportunity.

As far as my thoughts on the rifle over all- i like it way more than i thought i would. I always thought savage was cheap junk based on a very few guns i had seen. Then i saw a friend shoot a fox between the eyes at a lasered 356yds and i was IMPRESSED!!! He has the stevens 200 but suggested the Edge/Axis to me as he said someone he knew had just bought one and that they were very nice. I also read some articles recommending it. So i figured i'd give it a go.

The Redfield scope is also very nice for my use. I recommend it as well.

Forgot to mention 2 minor issues-

1- the bolt handle rubs on the scope eye peice if i'm not carefull

2- the bolt fails to strip a round from the mag if my support hand is pressing on the front of the bottom of the mag- i am used to holding it here on my floorplate bolt guns. No big deal- just have to learn to avoid holding it that way.
