I picked up a pre accutrigger 110 the other day for $200. It has a Bushnell banner scope on it that will look good on my 22mag. So I figure I have about 150 in the rifle. Now I don't know what to do with this rifle. It is a 7mm Mag, not my caliber of choice. I'm thinking of swapping it to a 280 AI. What kind of other long action choices are there in the in the sub 30 cal range? I like the 7mm bullet just not this cartridge.

Can I change the bolt head out and run a non-magnum round through this action? I'm gonna want to swap the stock as well, this one has the blind mag in it and I've gotten spoiled by detachable box mags on my other Savages and Tikkas. It seems like options are limited for a long action.

Really there are choices out there for the LA. You can change to a .473" (308/30-06) bolt head and run pretty much anything from 243 up. If you like 7mm and want more bang then you could go 7mm-STW. There are some barrels for that round available on the cheap at Numerich.
7x57 Mauser would be a cool retro 7mm round.

Nice snag!
You could also rebarrel to 7mm WSM and have the barrel throated for those nice long 160+ gr. bullets that wont fit in a short action of the same cartridge when seated out fully

No.2 on the 7 mauser. A great old cartridge with excellent ballistics. If you put a 1 in 10 twist barrel you can zing 140 gr slugs out to 2900FPS with 52 gr. of Win760. With a 1 in 9 twist you can shoot 154 gr. slugs to 2900FPS with 56.8 gr. of H450 or 160 gr. slugs to 2800FPS with 55.8 gr. of H450. Pretty good velocity for a cartridge over 120 yrs old. The twists I mentioned will give good accuracy for the bullet wgts I mentioned. I have 2 rifles in that cartridge, a custom Mauser and a Savage 110. Mauser has a 1-9 twist for the heavier bullets and the Savage has a 1-10 for the 140 gr. bullets. Both are 24 inch barrels and shoot sub MOA. And recoil is mild. Use a 30-06 size bolt head.

Absolutely anything you want. I use a follower in my so everything is single feed. I have a 204/223 bolthead with the spacer I got from SSS. It becomes whatever you need. It has been a 223, 22-250, 22-250 AI, 6mm Rem, 6 Rem AI, 6BR, 30 BR, and 308W depending on the day of the week and my need. I am building my 9 yr old a 223 rifle based on a LA because that action can become whatever he wants/needs in the future.

In terms of 7mm, I would take a look at the 284 Winchester. Seem to remember someone doing really well with that round in F/Class a few years back. I think the 284 W is making a come back at 7mm contender.

Luck, Tim

Damn you, that's a great idea that's going to cost me money... ;D ;D ;D

Your 280 AI caliber is spot on. Will do everything a 7 mag can do.

Have you thought about a 6.5x55 AI? The long action will allow you to seat 140 AMax's long..and take advantage of the case capacity.

I'd make it swap between 338 Edge and 223. ;D

Like mine.

Bolt head and barrel swap and you should be spot on for our 280 AI (might have to do some mag lip tweaking but not a big deal).

6.5-06AI is one you should look at too.

Rebarrel and tweak your mag lips (maybe get a new follower, I am not sure) and you have a .458 magnum good for anything on the planet!

I did the same with my older son. He started out with a 223, then 308W youth loads, know full 308W. He will shoot F/Class with me next year maybe a 223 maybe a 308... He will have to choose if wants to shot 70 rounds of 308W at a match. This is the current build with the barrel off to the gunsmith being shorten to 18". I love doing things with my kids. Luck, Tim

The deed is done. I just ordered a Shilen barrel in .280 Ackley Improved, 24" 1:9 twist, recessed crown, stainless. Could have got a .280 Rem or .284 Win within a few weeks but for some reason I feel I really need that extra 250fps ;D. Now i just gotta wait till March.

You've got a good wife! If I asked mine to do that she would tell me where to go.

Yeah, not sure mine would tell me where to go... but she would definitely laugh and give me that look, like where have you been for the last 25 years ;D
