thinking of a great whitetail round and something a bit different thant most rifle for whitetails. After the 1st of the new year, like to start slowly on a new 110E action think of the 7-30 Waters? any comments? I aint looking for distance , more of a killer wooded -semi wooded whitetail killer.

A nice 6.5 Grendel bolt-action would be fun too.

The 7-30 Waters if I rememeber is a 30-30 necked to 7mm. It is a rimmed cartridge which means it wont work in a bolt action rifle. Try a .308 loaded to 30-30 velocities or a little better using bullets made for the .30-30. That way you can keep the .308 barrel for hunting longer range areas. A 7mm-08 would work the same way, lighter loads and proper bullets for lower velocities. Less recoil as well. The .30 caliber 30-30 bullets will give better expansion at lower velocities. That is the load I use in my modell 88 Winchester lever gun in .308. I like IMR4895 and IMR3031 powders.

Do you wanna go really custom or something that u can still use off the shelf ammo for?

I've seen some buzz about the .30 BR....perhaps that might be in the mix as well.

I just posted a question about 303 british in a 110 and scrolled down and clicked this thread.. Rimmed cartridges will work in bolt action rifles.. The Enfield rifle is the first example I can think of but also I remember when I used to hunt in SC a few fellows used savage bolt guns chambered in that round....Just did a quick search and the savage model 340 seems to have been cataloged in this cartridge. Unless the 340 has a tube mag I would think they have a stacked magazine like normal bolt gunts The trick to using a rimmed cartridge in a stacked magazine is always pushing the cartridges front to back so the rims stack on each other. When you load a Enfield that is the secret to make sure they feed good. Once you get used to it it's kind of a habit.

If you are thinking of a 7mm in that speed class, what about doing a wildcat. Maybe a 250-3000 necked up to 7mm? Or would a 7BR do the trick? the 7BR would probably be a pain to get to feed.

Yes, the Savage 340 did shoot the 30-30. You could rebarrel one to .303 but the cost of a custom barrel, chambering and gunsmith installation/headspacing would be prohibitive and end up costing more than a 340 is worth.

lot a great suggestions...didnt think about rimmed cartridge. I'm a fan of anything of 7mm and have a collection of several from 7mm Ultra Mag, 7-08, 7mm STW , 7mm Mag, 7mm Express, custom sporterized 7.7x58mm Jap Type 99 Arisaka. I'm wanting to stay in the 7mm?

heres my list of bolt action I like to have to complete my total list in my life time.
7-30 Waters "if possiable"
7.21 firebird
7 mm Dakota
7 mm BR Remington

Ok, not on your list but certainly possible and a little different, 7mm IHMSA. A necked down 300 Savage.
