Got a question i recently purchased a new rifle. Sav. Mod. 10 1-9 223 with a 24 inch barrel. After breaking in the barrel shoot clean, shoot clean for 15 shots fire forming brass i repeated this step to ensure no copper build up after the break in I went to the load delopement I am at a loss..
so far i have not found the right combination of parts i guess. if anyone has a good load for this rifle using varget, H4895,H322 i would appreciate some help. My 12 223 shoots 69 smk,s & H4895 into the same hole@100yards. This gun shoots 1" groups and thats not acceptable to me
best groups so far:
25.8 varget 55 nosler ballistic tips seated at 2.279 3 shots in on large hole 2 fliers an inch from the group
25.5 varget 55 nosler ballistic tips seated at 2.279 4 shots in a clover 1 flier an inch from the group
26 varget 55 nosler ballistic tips seated at 2.279 3 shots one hole 2 fliers an inch from the group
24 varget 69 smk's seated at 2.234 3 into one hole 2 shots 1/4" from the group.

all loads were using remington brass and cci 400 small rifle primers. id like to find a real good shooting load for this gun but im getting aggrivated with it i have 3 other 223's 2 are 1-9 and 2 are 1-12 ive heard good about the 53 vmaxes and bc on them is outstanding. i need some help if someone has a load for the above powder i dont mind buying bullets im looking for a good coyote/ prairie dog load id be more than appreciative thanks in advance.

Give a Sierra 55gr gameking a try
26.0 grains varget
2.250 COL (Sierra book lenght is 2.240)
I am having good success with this round
The gameking rivals matchkings in accuracy with everything I have shot it in

55gr nosler bt
25.7gr H4895
COL as close to lands as you can get it

23.2gr H322
COL same as above

these loads shot great in several .223's Ive loaded for, but really ought to try some Blc2, H335, Imr4064, or H4198.

I know everyone is gonna say that 4198 is too fast but in 3 of the 4 223's I load for it is the most accurate

I've tried loads with the H4895 all the way from the min to the max at 2 grain incraments with the same problem 1" to 2" groups I have spent hours online looking for the "perfect" bullet for what im looking for. I think the more i read the more indecisive i get. My R700's love the H322 with 52smks and was hoping i could get lucky and load the same for all my weapons a good explosive pd bullet that will give me the ability to hunt coyote with. The more i read about different bullets and people using them in the field the more i cringe. I have personally seen a 40grain v-max drop a dog at 175yards and i took 35 coyote and 4 fox last year with my r-700 loaded with H322 and 52 smks. maybe im asking too much out of my rifles to find a good load in them all so i could load mass quanities and just keep replenishing the stock until barrels wear out. I'm going to get more H322 and try that i need a temp stable powder to go from 110* to -20* I will try these things and see if i can get this gun to shoot.. thanks for the help guys. ill try to get pics of the targets and groups to post on here..

Like I said H4198 is fast but its insensitive to temp changes and a very accurate powder in the 55gr 223. But then again you are up there in the max load range for Varget and 55gr Nbt. Maybe try to back off the Varget a little but youve probably already tried that also. One of the 223 I load for will not shoot Varget, doesnt like it at all.
Never been a big fan of Varget myself. Its a great powder and has won a lot of competitions and temp changes doesnt bother it, but my problem with it was from lot to lot. too much difference in todays varget and next weeks varget.

I personally think that your groups are fine and being spoiled by a bedding issue. Your overall lengths and loads are very very similar to some that work good in my guns.

Well that's my next step I'm gonna get an aftermarket stock and giver a try I wanted to make sure it was a shooter before throwin money at it but it is in stock form my 12 likes varget but after I made the switch to H4895 that's been my go to powder for that weapon my R-700's like 40vmax on top of varget only to be beat out by 52smks on top of H322. I will play with the factory stock and seating depth and see what I can make of it thanks guys I'll report back after I get some rounds down range
