Hello fellow savage owners i'm about to purchase the 12FVSS and wondered about barrel life. If taken care of approx. how many rounds till time for a new barrel or barrel job. I just keep hearing these are barrel burners and to buy .223 from most my local shops. let me know of your experience so I can make confident decision. I live in the Texas Panhandle so wind is an issue. Thanks any input is greatly appreciated

I put 4100 rounds through my original model 12 barrel in 22-250 varmit contour. The groups had opened up to about 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards. Still worked pretty well in the prairie dog towns at shots up to about 200 yards. The lands had eroded forward about 3/4 of an inch. Originally, when new, I shot a few 5 shot groups at 100 yards that could be covered with a dime. I have abused this barrel and still feel like I got good value from it. On several trips I had the barrel so hot that it felt like a bee sting when you touched it.

I just purchased the same rifle.

Any suggestions on accurate loads for varmints and deer size game?

I tried the factory federal 60 grain partitions and can't keep them inside 2" at 100 yards. Same with factory winchester 64 grain. Rem 55grain SP shoots sub moa but not really the bullet that I wanted to shoot.

Thanks.

My .22-250 was not a Savage but it liked the Sierra 55 gr. Game Kings REAL WELL!

BS. Get your 22-250 and love every minute of it. I've got 2 22-250's, a tikka and a remington. Both have no less than 2000 rounds, still shooting great. I have shot squirrels and dogtowns till I burned my fingers on the barrel and had to walk off into the shade in order to cool the barrels.

"It's Okay to get your barrel very hot shooting varmints like squirrels and prairie dogs. That's what gunsmiths are here for."

If you can burn out a 22-250 barrel, more power to you. Consider it a badge of honor.

I have a factory barrel that has over 1400 rounds down the tube and it still shoots under 1/2 inch 5 shot 100 yard groups.
