I'm still waiting on my barrel, but was just wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what velocity I can expect. I've done alot of reading on the net about it, but was looking for some first hand experience.

My barrel is gonna be a 28" Criterion Bull Barrel on a Savage BVSS LA T&T by Fred at SSS. I was hoping to make use of the Retumbo and H4831sc that I have on hand. I may give RL17 a try also, but I sure like the stability of the Hodgons powders. I've also decided to use WW brass and BR2's as a starting place.

Thanks!

Jerry Tierney's light gun loads (180 VLD) should be good for your 28" barrel Simon. He is a class guy who not only sets records but shares his loads. His cleaning regimen is a real eyebrow raiser but what the heck I'll take his scores any day. The H4831 is a winner too.

Thanks for the link.

I sure hope this all works out. I've never second guessed myself so much about a cartridge in my life! Hope I didn't make a mistake getting rid of the 7 mag.

Don't second guess yourself. A known gun builder suggested my next build should be a 284! States it's an awesome 600+ yd rifle. I plan on shooting mine at 1k.

Question: What die set are you planning on using? Will you ever neck up 6.5x284 brass?

I just went with a Forster Ultra set with the Micrometer seater. I cant say that I will never neck up the 6.5 stuff, but I just decided to go the easier route for now and stick with WW. I've used Norma, WW, and Rem brass in the past for other rifles and I've had the best luck with WW. Never tried Lapua, I'm sure its awesome and after I get the gun all setup and shooting good I may look into trying the 6.5 brass. Half of the fun for me is the tinkering!

Winchester is my second choice for brass. Lapua being first.

Let us know how the gun performs when you get it built.

Started reading about the 6.5x284 a few weeks ago and it seems many BR shooters prefer to use .284 Winchester bulk brass in that caliber over all others. Problem is Winchester only does a run of those one or two times a year. If they work great in the 6.5x284 they should be as good or better in the 284.

Hope I didn't make a mistake getting rid of the 7 mag.

I like the 7 mag a lot but we could always trade. ;D I think the 284 is going to be a good choice.

If worse comes to worse and I cant get the 2800 that I think I need with the 180's I'll just switch to 162 A-maxes or the 168 VLD or SMK. I may pursue the A-maxes right off the bat because I should be able to push them 2950 or so. According to my ballistic program they'll get me to 850 alot flatter and with just a tad more wind deflection. BUT there is a reason all the F-class guys are using the 180's and not the 162's. IDK, just with the barrel would get here so I can quit over thinking it so much.
