OK, I am looking at options to buying a new rifle for this application.

I have a Stevens 200 LA (currently chambered in 25-06, center feed, internal mag. Completely stock from the factory) (I did tweak the trigger to make it acceptable ;) ) What would it take to make this rifle feed a 6.5-284? Swapping the barrel is pretty straight forward, my concern is with the internal magazine, and what it will take to make the new cartridge feed properly. Your help is appreciated. Thank you! :)

why not a 6.5-06?

I considered that. :) I have another 25-06. My concern is with the possibility of someone, other then myself, (wife and kids, who use the same rifles) chambering the wrong cartridge. Both showing 25-06 headstamps. I would most likely form the 6.5-06 from 25-06 brass. I would feel better with a differant parrent case. Yes, I know the 6.5 "should" not be able too fully close on a 25-06 chamber, in a perfect world, however, am I willing to risk the health and well being of my family on "should"???? Both being the same parrent case is my concern. I would feel safer with a differant parrent case. I also considered using nickle cases for one or the other, but I REALLY don't like using nickle cases! They are very hard on dies in my experience.

.270 brass, 30-06 brass. use 30-06 military brass, it doesnt say either on the headstamp

The 30-06 110 staggerd feed action and the Axis 25-06 both where barrel changes to 6.5-284. They both feed 6.5-284 cases from the blind magazine and clip with no problems......With the 140 grain Amax seated just off the lands.
Lots of room to load them long, a short action would be very cramped for a repeater!

good to hear that the straight feed, non-staggered , feed works for your axis! (the Axis utilises a non-staggered magazine , yes?) I am concerned with this action feeding the 6.5-284. I am also considering a 6.5 creedmoor for the same set up, does anybody have information on how that cartridge would feed with this current set up?

I am currently building a 6.5x284 on a 200 la, and it feeds great, no problems from the straight feed....rsbhunter

Looks like that is going to work just fine then! :) Thank you!

Now, on to selecting a barrel, stock, trigger etc.....This will be my first barrel swap, so I will need to buy a barrel nut wrench, vice, and action wrench too.

I hope to start this project some time early next year, I'm just laying out ground work, and getting my facts together; making a plan, and getting ready, so there are no surprises.
