Builiding a new rifle, it is going to be a hunting rifle. My question is for opinions or expierence on the best barrel length and conour for a 280 AI. I would like this to be a fairly light rifle as it is going to be my main rifle to carry in the south Georgia woods out to longer range hunts in Kentucky/Iowa. Thank you.

I'd go 26" factory magnum contour. Long enough for the caliber but still light enough to carry.

I have a Browning A-Bolt Medallion that I have been thinking of rebarrelling to that caliber. The gun is currently VERY comfortable to carry here in the mountains of Idaho. It has a pencil thin 22" barrel. If I get it rebarrelled, I would go 24" at most and keep it as close to the current taper as possible. I can understand going a little longer for a caliber like the 280 AI but I wouldn't go with a heavy taper if you want to keep it light weight. BTW, my Browning with factory barrel shoots 130gr Hornady interlocks into like .5" at 100 yds with its light sporter weight barrel. I would expect a good aftermarket barrel in 280 AI to do at least as well.

I have a Browing Stainless Stalker that I had rebarreled to 280AI. It has a 26" #4 contour Schneider barrel smithed by Darrell Holland. An absolute tack driver but a little on the heavy side. Would make a great beanfield rifle.
