Model 10 FCP .308 use 7.62? Savage says NO.....

I know it has been discussed before, can you use a 7.62 in a .308 rifle? Well from what I read on the net is yes you can. So just to be sure I called Savage and asked them and they told me it was not safe to do. Now so far I will listen to them because who else would know better than the people who made the rifle, right? Well that may not be entirely true but I do not have the knowledge or the experience to challenge that so that is why I'm asking here on SavageShooters. So would you use a 7.62 cartridge in a model 10 FCP? I assume the guy at Savage said that for a liability reason so they would not have a lawsuit on their hands.

The short answer is yes, it is safe to use 7.62x51 in a .308.

It will be safe in a bolt action but not recommended. It is a headspace issue with the military round being longer, the brass is slightly thicker. Might be stiff to chamber in some rifles with tighter tolerances. Or it won't chamber in some. If it chambers ok I would use it

Sorry - not quite right. Absolutely nothing wrong with using 7.62x51 in a commercial 308 rifle (assuming the ammo is good!). Using commercial 308 in a 7.62x51 military rifle is what can get you in trouble (higher pressure round in a potentially weak action with a long chamber). Loading Rem/Fed/Win 308 in a converted Mauser 95, some CETMEs, and Indian Enfield No2's could lead to a very bad day!

As long as it is NATO ammo (with the cross in a circle) you won't have any problem. Some ammo out there (BAD surplus Indian hit the market a few years back) is risky to shoot in anything and that is what Savage is likely responding too.

All that being said - Using surplus in your fine model 10 FCP is kind of like running a top fuel drag car on pump gas.

you are right. I believe it is opposite with 223 and 5.56. don't shoot 5.56 in a 223 chamber. the 5.56 is hotter.....
