long range scope in the 350 to 500 dollar range

In that price range looking at new scopes i would look at either the sightron sll big sky or the vortex viper. Both have excellent glass for the money and top notch warranty.

Weaver, Leupold, Burris, Nikon, and Sightron have good scopes below $600 if you do some looking around.

The Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20 is an excellent scope for the money, under $400 I think at Natchez right now. I've been using one on my 12FV in .243 for a couple of years. Easy to read mirage with it and pretty darn bright and crisp.

I just bought a leupold vx-r 3x9 for 599. Its mil/mil with the Tmr reticle. Not sure what magnification power you are looking for. I also have a 6x18x40 Nikon buckmaster that's pretty nice. You'll need a 20 mia base though. It has 1/8th clicks. Check out midwayusa.com. they are having a scope sale. Click on the closeout button on the top right of the screen.

If you don't need AO or SF, then I would highly recommend that you get the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam. It is 3-10X40mm with 1/10th mil adjustments.

It is currently on sale at Midway for 299.99. I have one on my 10FP and I am very happy with it. I have not shot it past 250, but I would not hesitate to shoot it out to 600. Everybody that has shot my rifle or looked through the scope has commented how clear it was.

If you look hard enough you can get a used Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 LTR for used $600-650. They are (were) $750-800 new. Wonderful scope, just more than I care to spend. The warranty on (the better) Leupolds is second to none..... If it is their scope they fix it regardless of age or condition.

Things you should consider before your purchase are

1: power range
2: reticule type (varmint or Mil-Dot or fine or duplex or etc...)
3: illumination
4: MOA adjustment for vertical (if you want to shoot +600 yds you will need offset base with most scope, but some with do +100 MOA vertical.
5: clarity
6: tracking
7:....? the list goes on.

IMHO - you get want you pay for with scopes/optics. Period. If you haven't read the Optics Reviews on the SS home page, check those out. For $600 you can get a lot of scope. But you can also get something that doesn't it "your" needs.

+5 on the Vortex. In fact, my Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 EBR-1 MOA Reticle MOA Turrets will be delivered tomorrow. Now, I got the SFP as everything I shoot is darn near zapped with a rangefinder first. So, for $750 (yes a tad bit above your budget) I think it's worth it. I've looked thru these and shot these mounted on my buddies rifles and I just don't think you can beat 'em for the price.
