250-3000 vs 250 Ackley (40deg shoulder)

Ok just looking for some "Real World" velocities from these 2 cartridges. I know there are a few folks on here that shoot these 2 rounds, and I'm hoping they chip in some info. This will be a hunting gun, 99.9% Michigan Whitetails, shots under 200yds. There are 4 bullets I'm looking at running- 80gr Barnes TTSX- 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tip- 100gr Sierra ProHunter- and of course my go to bullet for my 25-06 a 100gr Nosler partition.
The gun I'm looking at screwing the barrel on is a Stevens Model 200 in 22-250 with a staggered feed, which is Tailor made for either round. Either round will fit the magazine of this gun with a 100gr bullet seated to the base of the neck, so more than likely I will need alittle free bore cut in to either barrel.
Looking at a Factory contour Barrel cut to 20" to 22" (shorter the better but don't want to lose to many FPS).
The barrel will more than likely start as a 250-3000 from midway (unless someone has one laying around and wants to part with it ??).
I would like to keep the velocity above 3000fps.
So are these reasonable exceptions from either of these rounds ?

and last but not least these are the only 2 rounds I'm looking at so the 6mm and 6.5 are out are out

above 3000fps is not an easy task for the 250savage with a 100gr bullet. The Ackley has alot less trouble getting there but then you have fireforming and all that. I know you dont want to hear this but the 257ackley is the better choice.

But you have fireforming and all that with the 257 AI too.

You can easily get 2,800 FPS out of a 22" barrel with 100 grainers in the 250. With the 250 AI it is easy to get around 3,100 with the 100 grainers.

Either one will thump a whitetail at your ranges.

I really like the 250 AI - one of my favorites as it can push the 100 and 120 grain bullets to useful velocities for game and it really shines as a varmint gun with the lighter bullets - and does it all with less powder (and blast) than other quarter bores. And fireforming is just part of the fun - 75 grain hollow point fire forming loads make great groundhog/yote/paper punching rounds in the spring and summer and then you have a supply of formed brass for loading up your deer rounds.

I wasnt implying that the 250 Savage wasnt a good cartridge nor the 250 Savage AI, theyre both great cartridges. But neither will perform with the 257 Roberts AI. 257 roberts AI would be the easiest way to keep the 25 caliber, keep the short action, and keep the velocities above 3000fps with a 100gr bullet

If all you are looking for is velocity, the 25 WSM is up there too.

I just think the 250 AI's capacity is right at a sweet spot for the 257 bore (just like the 7x57 is just "right" for the mauser case in 7mm).

I like the way you think Eric. I just like the looks, and the speed that little case can generate. and I think the 250 Ackley will suit our needs just fine.. Thanks for all the input fellas

257 roberts is a tight fit in a Savage short action, especially if you don't want to be burying the bullets deep in the case. I'm still toying around with my 25-300 Ruger Compact Magnum idea - just don't want to part with the money to have the reamer and custom dies made (that and Berger never came through with the new .25cal VLD bullet they were promising last year).

Wouldn't be as fast as Ed's 25-300 WSM, but it shouldn't burn out the barrel as fast either.

If deciding between the 250 Savage and 250 Savage AI, I'd definitely go the AI route as it offers the most gain of all the AI cartridges. Fire forming isn't an issue as Eric explained.

I agree that the Roberts is about all the short action can handle, go with the 250AI.

The 250 AI is a dang fine round for a Striker also.

I've got a 250 built on a savage 110 action and my brother has got a roberts on a ruger action and I can out run him by 100fps all day long. The same brother also has a Roberts improved and a 250 improved that shoot a 115 Berger neck and neck at 3100fps with the 250AI being the more efficient. My next ackley will be the 250 for sure set up on a nice light weight coues deer rig.

Are you guys getting the 250AI and 257AI to feed from the magazine or are you shooting them single?

My 110 was originally a. 270 and my 250 feeds fine from the magazine.
