Maybe one of you can steer me right. I am putting together a left hand #12 action, new from the custom shop, into a cut down vlp stock. The stock is being duplicated by a fellow over in east TN with a dakota 5 axis cutting machine. And it ain't too bad a price. Decided to try it as a det/mag, that's what the custom shop shipped. He will cut the butt off and add some width/length in the grip to make a rear pistol grip, (I will attempt to try and shape to my fit).

Here's my trigger question: this pistol is rear grip and will use the standard accu-trigger and metal guard, no problems there. What would it take to make a savage action mid grip? After handling a xp 100 with a mid grip, what a great little frame for a carry field pistol!

Can the trigger be moved forward and use a linkage? I haven't torn down a striker or xp to look at how those triggers are fitted. And is that something a good smith could duplicate?

The Savage Striker linkage is 3 versions.

The Gen 1 version uses a linkage with roller bearings to press down on the rear of the trigger bar. Could be duplicated or even transferred from someone who has removed theirs and gone rear trigger.

Gen 2 and 3 use a teeter totter linkage that presses down on the front of the trigger bar.

Personally I feel they are all over-complicated. If I were doing it, I would do something real simple like start with the accutrigger or the SSS and fab up a small bracket for my trigger on the recoil pad (ala XP) and a simple push bar to the trigger show with a thread adjustment for take up.

Or you can make an electric trigger. With all the paint ball guns out there, several have aftermarket electric triggers. All you would need to do is devise a bracket to hold the soleniod for pushing on the trigger bar somehow.

There are a few ideas for you. IMHO, the simpler, the better. Also, most that went to rear trigger did so to reduce recoil as the whole weight of the gun now lies on the front of the action.

The fellow cutting a stock for me has a midgrip .221fb in xp100. It handled great and the trigger was perfect at 1.5lb. He said the trigger linkage is a simple metal push rod. Sure did balance well. He uses a 2" wide camera strap with a clip, attaches it to a lug on the back of the grip. Was able to adjust the strap around my neck to the right length for my arms, hold the pistol outright and steady it...kind of like the straps Canadian Mounties used in the old photos. I will be practicing that shooting stance for hunting when my stock arrives. Honestly, was able to hold the shooting/sighting position as good as a rifle offhand.

if you want to use a detachable mag forget the center grip it would never work

Planned it for a single. All it takes is a sss blank bedded in. Some strikers had an abbreviated 2 round blind mag didn't they?

yes, and the trigger linkage hinged on a couple of ears on the floor plate on some of the set ups. just go rear grip unless you eant to engineer and design a entire new system

The "floor plate" that you are referring to is actually the bottom of the magazine box. These are staked in, and most of them are loose, or at least have some movement. If the "box" that the linkage is anchored to is not steady, that pretty much guarantees an inconsistent sloppy trigger pull. You can tighten up the box by carefully re-staking the corners, or with a reasonable application of Brownell's Steel Bed (my preference). A surprising number of the strikers have triggers that actually contact the stock. Relieve the trigger opening to free up the trigger if necessary. In some cases a shorter backlash screw (the one in the trigger) may be required. A good many of the Striker triggers have oversize linkage pin holes which causes more slop. Wayment Engineering makes oversize linkage pins to correct this problem.

I have had at least one Striker where the sear adjustment screw had a rough bearing surface, which caused a good bit of creep. I polished mine until it was smooth, and it made a great improvement in the trigger. You can always replace this screw, if you are not confident in your polishing ability. These are the "easy" trigger fixes, but trigger replacement is not always the answer, if linkage is the problem. Savage recommends a minimum trigger pull of 2.5 lbs for safe operation.

One other point, the Striker is a pillar bedded free floating barrel design, but I have a Super Striker in .308 Win. that shoots its best groups with some upward pressure on the barrel. Just something else to try. I have never seen a Striker that was not an exceptionally accurate shooter. Sometimes, you just have to spend a little time "polishing" the relationship.

Pistol project is nearing assembly, rear grip, accu-trigger. Hope to work on the stock shaping this week or next. Barrel and action are here. Ordered sights a couple days ago. Using vlp stock as pattern, trigger and mag are factory.

Would like to see a pistol forum on this site. Didn't know there were many pistol shooters. Talked to savage this week, they kind of hinted the stryker may re-appear in their offerings.

I am intrested in your project appleseed.
My buddy and I have been talking about doing this same type of thing. He did one rear grip using a Choate varmint stock and cut the butt stock off. That worked well as his is a 338 mag with an 18" plus barrel plus brake, and it tames the recoil a bit.
We have also started to collect material and tooling to do an aluminum stock similar to this, but we have a ways to go yet.

I have been looking at centergrip ideas also, and found a few pictures of an Ultra Lite Arms pistol a while back. It has a magazine and an intresting linkage.

I would like to see your stock and how it came from the shaper. I have friends in the Kingsport area, and if he can copy and modify, I have a Striker stock I would like to get copied, with a few mods.

I will post some pics when we get it shaped, expect I will have some finish to do. Thanks for the photos! This stock is a vlp det/mag & forarm with a choate butt added (will cut off). Left plenty of wood on the grip to shape.

If he can get some stocks to copy for patterns, he mentioned there could be several styles available in the future. He uses a lot of walnut and has some interesting burled woods, and standard maple and cherry. Hal Daughtry...also used to work as a tool and dye maker, (pistol patterns).

The ULA linkage is about like the XP.

Will be for left hand/left port small shank action (atf complient); hate cutting off all that good wood. Once we get one shaped, we can make a second finish pattern to cut from. I'm considering making another slimmer stock for field carry.

Great looking stock Lou.

Plan to slim the lines of the forarm, I almost choose the cooper as a pattern. Using factory trigger guard and det/mag assembly. Stock maker suggested a strap lug (bipod lug) to the back of the grip. Tried his xp setup and could steady it off-hand, uses a camera strap.
